MPG Honesty.

Nick, with me wind plays a big part. With a good head wind 8 1/2 to 91/2 good tail wind I usually run 12/13 mpg . I am pulling a Pinnacle 36reqs that is actually 40ft . My tow rig is a 2013 F-350 DRW Crew cab long box 4x4 6.7 diesel. 3:73 gears . Empty 15/16 mpg. Speed is a big factor for mileage in a diesel I run 60 65 on average when towing . Drops fast when you put your foot in it

Wind, for sure!
My current rig gets around 13mpg loaded on the flat with no wind. My previous rig would get 9-ish with the same conditions.

Can I play Devils advocate for a minute? I see a lot of posts here re. MPG. unless I were doing a cross country trip and needed to know how far I could travel between trips to get to the next station I couldnt care less about what my mileage is. I have always figured an RV was like a boat, if you have to worry about the fuel then you shouldn't buy one.

Please understand, I mean no malice at all to anyone, I just was curious about why so much interest.

Pulling a Premier 351 RSTS fifth wheel with a 2013 Ram 3500 SRW with the Cummins. Average 9 mpg towing and 21 not hooked up. Wind makes a bit of difference but the big impact is the weight of my right foot.

Recent trip on way to beach. Calm winds. I get the best at this speed and rpm. At 70 drops to 11.

My mileage just about mirrors yours on average with the 11 yr old 2500. Of course as others have noted head/tail winds can make a big difference. I have seen 16 hiway mpg not towing a time or two under good conditions and driving the speed limit or close to it.

My 5.7 Tundra 4x4 gets about 18 on the highway (empty) around 65. I do mostly city driving though and average about 15.

Towing 6500 lbs at 65 mph I get right around 10. Wind in my face I get 9. Wind at my back I might squeeze 11.

For the record, I have 285/70 17 E rated tires too. With lighter tires I might get a little better, but a squirmier ride while towing. I'll sacrifice 1 mpg for rock solid stable towing.

I towed many different trailers many miles with the truck below. I calculated my mpg many times under many road and wind conditions. I hauled very few very large or very small trailers. I usually drove on highways at 60-62mph, loaded and unloaded. Driving much faster than that, mpg dropped significantly. All that said..

Hauling travel trailers: 10-11mpg
Hauling 5th wheels: 11-12mpg
Unloaded: 19-20mpg

TV and TT in signature...averages:

Unloaded highway: 16 -18
City/daily driving: 13 -15
Towing no headwind: 11-12 (flat)
Towing headwind : 8/9
Overall average towing: 10/11

I live in south Texas so no mountains or major grades towed...wind plays the biggest factor in my mileage while towing. Recent trip to the coast I pulled 13mpg on the way there, 8 on the way home due to strong headwind!

Took a little trip with my FW this spring and my console told me I got around 12 mpg for 3,800 miles. When I hand figured it, I got just about the same. Did some climbing with the FW and some flat land. When I take my FW and our boat up to Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park, going up and back towing both items, we have gotten as much as 13.6 and as low as 12 mpg.

I took a drive a couple days ago to see the site of the Oso, WA landslide. It was a 196 mile round trip, fill-up to fill-up. My truck used 9.08 gallons of gas, which came out to a calculated 21.58 MPG. No wind to speak of, and most of the trip was highway cruising at 60mph or slower.

However, driving in town (my normal type of driving these days), truck usually gets around 15MPG.

Towing MPG average of many thousands of miles, all conditions and terrains (mountains, plains, head and tail winds), runs right at 10.5MPG.

Understand where you are coming from and I feel the same. It may be a curiousity thing, but think its more about folks feeling good about their TV/RV set up. Given that the answer is always the same [something between 8/9 on the low side to 12/13 on the high side] I think there is the hope that someone has broken the code [like the eco-bust towers] and is getting a lot more.

I can already hear the keystrokes, "just people chatt'n about stuff", and I get it. Anything new this time? Nope!

I have an Eco-Boost F-150 mileage not towing is approximately 17 to 19 mpg. Towing I get between 9 to 11 mpg, (mostly 9 to 9 1/2 mpg)i tow at 60-65 mph.

We were shocked on our first trip.

Second trip I didn't care - not mpg - but mpdays.

All good.

I agree with Bassdogs, everyone is in about the same boat.

If you are new to hauling a TT then I guess the thread helps to create your gas budget for whatever cross country trip you may be planning.

EcoBoost

It all depends on who is driving...

Highway Towing we get 9 - 11mpg (max 60mph).
Highway (not towing) 24mpg @ 60
Highway (not towing) 21mpg @ 70
City (not towing) and I am driving 17 -18 mpg
City (not towing) and DW is driving 16 mpg

I get a kick out of seeing the max mpg I can get out of it, drives the wife crazy :-)

My 1969 Olds 442/W30 got 5 mpg (max) going down hill and a strong wind pushing me. Back then there was no replacement for displacement (Cu In). I used to go to the local airport to get 100+ octane. Look at us now...

I do appreciate everybodys input so far. Like I have said before, this is just curiosity. There are some figures mentioned here I am impressed with.
I have towed with many different combinations over the last 15 years and have found that the biggest factors are wind, TV torque band/weight of load, and the infamous right foot. Heck, I have even towed a 25,000# load with Peterbilt (Cummins 335) and got 7MPG on the flats.

Thanks again everybody. Safe travels!
