New diesel MPG

Just wondering what the new diesels are getting for MPG? I hear the new Cummins are about 13 MPG empty, we are going to start looking for another truck.

Mileage depends on how you drive it.... the new ones do get worse mileage but 13??? I get 22 solo but then mine is not new.. and I plan to keep her...

My lifetime average with my '11 Duramax is 15mpg hand calculated. I do a fair amount of city driving and also use my remote start often in the winter. If I am solo driving on the highway I have seen as high as 20mpg over a 500+ mile drive if I keep the speed at 70 or under. When towing, my average is 12.5mpg no matter how light or heavy I seem to pack.

My dodge isnt new but then a 2008 isnt real old either.

I get 15 mpg just driving around empty

18 to 19 mpg highway empty

9 mpg towing the 5er across country

I have to say though the 5er weighs 14,500 pounds when loaded and I had a smaller and lighter 5er that only weighed 10,900 and I got 11 1/2 mpg so weight and wind resistance has a lot to do with what mpg you are going to get

I can live with 18 empty 12 towing our trailer is 7500lb GVW we will keep looking no rush yet. I drive about 35 miles to work and 30 is hwy. We have a 3 person carpool so I only drive that 35 miles every third week otherwise it is a 1 mile drive to our meeting point.

Our Dodge has the newer engine and transmission and is a 07.5. Hiway, 18-19 General driving in town 15-16 and towing 10-13. I hand calculate as the computer mileage is off about 1mpg.

I have a 2011 ram 2500 Diesel, tow a 322FKS Eagel about 9,000 lbs. Went to lake Erie this past week end, got 13.2 towing up 12.6 on return trip. Average 11.5 13.5 towing solo on road 18 in town about 14.

Great Truck, went from Chevy 6.0 gas to Diesel. Happy Camping

Clutch,

I'm glad to here this. I have put off looking at a new Dodge because of the fuel mileage. My hiway mileage is just above yours, and towing is 12-14. My fuel mileage really jumped up when I hit the 80,000 mile mark. We averaged 14.5 going from Urbana, Il to Mackinaw City, MI., and 20.2 running around the UP.

Regards,

I've got 94,000 on my truck. About a week after I bought the truck new, I put on the K&N cone filter, edge power box, and a 4.5 inch cat back exhaust. It haa a host of other goodies, but what I never liked were the seats. So a year or so back, I broke down and went to Classy Chassis in Valpo, Indiana, and them install a set of custom seats. Wish I would of done it years ago. The back of the front seats will almost go to the bottom of the rear seats! The wife loves them.

Regards,

While no one wants to buy a new or new to them truck and then put more money into it I would highly reccomend an exhaust upgrade on any diesel. It's the cheapest and best mod you can do for it IMHO. Allowing your engine to breath will improve your power and economy. Most stock come with a 3" back exhaust and in some cases it is much smaller than that at bends and some locations throughout the run. I put 4" turbo back, retaining the cat and my mileage went up 2.5 miles per gallon.

Some of the newer diesels, not sure what year are requiring the addition of a emmisions additive that you must add in order for the engine to run properly. I am not versed on this but have heard that it is expensive and does little to enhance mileage but is also an additional factor into your cost per mile.

No DEF for this truck. The truck still has almost 2 years of power train warranty left as it was bought new in June of 2009. I will look into an intake and exhaust in the near future and probably a full DPF delete. 3 more hours until I go see it.
