New Tow Vehicle

We just bought our first travel trailer and tow vehicle, woohoo!!! We have already been out in them a couple of times and decided we should have done this a long time ago. We were originally looking at getting the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V-8 and tow package but I was concerned about the 750lbs max trailer tongue weigh, everything else seemed fine for it as a tow vehicle. So we ended up with a 2015 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost and the max tow package which comes with the 3.55 rearend. If I remember right that puts the GCWR at 16,900 and the max trailer at 12,200 which is plenty for our 2015 Jayco Whitehawk 24RDB at 6500 max weight (actual loaded weight 5960). There is even room for a nice upgrade if we decide to get a larger camper down the road, but I doubt we will since it is just the two of us. Here are our numbers, truck loaded weight 5558 (7000 GVWR) which means we could have a trailer weight of 11,342 (technically), trailer axle weight 5220, tongue weight 740, total trailer 5960, tongue weight percentage 12.42%, combined weight 11,518.

This thing pulls great and you don't even know the trailer is back there, even in the hills of Southern Missouri. The truck still does not have 3000 miles on it but I have been getting around 12.2 MPG pulling the trailer mainly on two lane roads doing 55 MPH or less. On the interstate I stay below 65 MPH but the mileage drops. Next week we will go on a trip that is mostly interstate so I will see if the 12 MPG holds, probably not. But so far we love the combination of the truck and the trailer that we chose.

Thanks for the comments. We are really looking forward to traveling and seeing America. This is new to my wife so we are sticking close to home for now. Maybe next season we will get a little further from home

Nice outfit.

My wife bought a 2015 F150 Supercrew with a 3.5 Ecoboost and 6.5' box. We had a 2013, same truck w/3.0L EB. We put 90,000 on the 2013 and never had two seconds trouble. Ford has come up with a nice F150, for sure.

Thanks for all the comments. We are really enjoying the truck and camper and the truck does a great job pulling. I just wish Ford would have kept the cab a little smaller and used the 6.5' bed as standard. Ours has the 5.5' bed and with the bigger cab a 6.5' bed with this cab would not fit in the garage. Oh well, still a great truck.

Just a quick update. I have gotten as high as 13.3MPG towing on the interstate at 65MPH and as low as 10.2MPG fighting a headwind.
Around town I have been getting 18.5 to 19.5MPG. I have gotten as high as 23.5MPG on two lane roads at 60MPH and I get between 20 and 21.5MPG on the highway. So I am very happy with my decision to buy this truck.

That's great mileage! I hear those F150s pull like a train. You have a great combo there!

Thanks, we really like the truck and camper; I think we made some great choices. It does pull very well, you don't even know the trailer is back there. I have been very happy with the mileage considering the truck is set up for towing and not highway mileage.

Congrats! Did you get the trailer reverse option? That looks real cool in review videos. I really wish an Expedition version of your truck existed already so I could buy one. The aluminum body, better interior, more goodies is so enticing.

I am not sure about the trailer reverse option, don't know what that is. It does have the backup camera that shows the trailer hitch and you can backup right to the trailer with a perfect lineup each time. I got the Lariat and it does have a great interior. It is by far the nicest vehicle I have ever owned.
