new truck?
Need some advice please. Right now I am towing a white hawk 28bhds with a 2015 f150. I am going to be upgrading to either a Chevy 2500 or 3500 gas. The price between the 2 are almost the same. I know some people say diesel but I can't justify the the 8 to 10 grand more for something I am not towing with everyday and not towing in the mountains of the west. (I live in new england). The question is what truck, 2500 or 3500 should I be leaning towards. It is a daily driver and will be used to to tow trailers 2 to 3 time a month and snow plowing 3 driveways. Also upgrading to a fifth wheel isn't out of the question in the future (4 or 5 year) I plan on keeping it for about 10 plus years

If you plan on upgrading to a 5er, just get the 3500 for the higher payload. You won't regret it and it won't put as much limitations on what you plan on looking at down the road. Just my $.02!

I say go with 3500. Just make sure you take it for a long test drive to see if your ok with the stiffer ride. I know you said you didn't want the diesel but if you're buying a new gasser maybe a used diesel isn't too far out of your price range. Good luck you will like towing alot with the bigger truck.

I went for the 3500 SRW, almost no price difference and I got a payload of 3500 lbs (Duramax) which is about 1000 lbs more than the 2500 version. I went all in, crew cab, long bed, 4x4 LTZ with the Duramax. I know you said you didn't want the diesel, but I would certainly consider it. Yes it is S8-10k the first time, but the resale will also be $8-10k higher. It sure is nice for towing, I currently have an 8500 lb travel trailer and it doesn't know it's there. If you are considering a 5th wheel in the future, I would get the truck with the 5th wheel prep package also.

The 6.0 is a very reliable but old engine, if you can wait for the next model year they might offer an updated gas engine or smaller diesel. I would stay away from diesels since you live in a colder area, short trips in cold weather is not good for them.

I owned a '15 Dmax 2500. It's an awesome truck, but if you're looking for something with more capabilities than a half ton but don't need that 12K+ that an HD provides, then you should take a serious look at either the diesel or gasser Titan XD.

Jake,
Welcome!!!
As for which truck, x whatever it may be now for the 3500. Last I had checked, GM has now gone to two different gvwr's for the 3500's, 10k and 11,XXX. I am. It sure what rar or ra the 10k model has, but make sure you don't end up with a truck with only 500lbs more payload over the 2500 if you indeed do see a 5r in the future. Could be a fair amount of payload difference.
In regards to the new Titan, I have read some very good things so far about it. The limiting factor though will be the available payload of the truck, just like any other 1500/150 based trucks. While It may be possible to stay below the rar of it with a 5r, chances are you would be close once loaded up, and over the rated gvwr.
Once suggestion if you do decide to go for a 2500, try to skip the 20" wheels!!! While the selection of available tires is growing, there are still tires not available in the stock size or slightly larger (275/60/20). Have to go to a 285/55/20, 295/55/20, or 275/65/20 for some models. If GY SRA are still the stock tires, they werent to bad the first 2yrs we had our '13, but last winter the performance dropped dramatically. As of last week, still have 8/32 and 10/32 for tread. That's why I have a set of Cooper ATP's (Discounts own version of the A/T3) that are in now, just need the time to get them installed.
Will the kids still be joining when the 5r may be a good possibility?
Good luck deciding!!!!

If you are considering a 5er in the future then a 3500 is the way to go. Very little difference in price ($1200?) but you'll need the extra payload for the 5er. The ride is no different. The 3500 and 2500 have the same first set of leaf springs - the 3500 has an additional set that don't come into play until the truck squats into them. Look at the two side by side and compare - you'll see what I mean.
The big gassers will pull anything you need but for me the transmission hunting was annoying so I went with a Diesel. It just goes and you don't know it is pulling anything.

I am trying to make the same decision right now. With my family continuing to grow I have made the decision that this is the last 1/2 ton I will own, at least for the foreseeable future. I plan to milk another 2 years out of my current truck and then move into something larger. That being said, I cant decide between the 2500 or 3500 SRW. I want the extra payload of the 1 ton, but the truck is also my daily driver and I'm not sure my aging backside will enjoy the ride in a 1 ton with no weight in the back. Like you I am having a hard time justifying the diesel because of how infrequently I tow, but man do I want that torque. Decisions, decisions.................

3500. Daily driver get the big gas. If it's only a trailer hauler get the diesel. I'm a Dodge guy but all three major manufacturers (Dodge, Ford, GM) make great trucks. My preference in diesels is always the Cummins. In a gas the big 6+ litre motors in GM and Ram are great engines. My wife's Yukon has the 6.2 gas and it goes like a scalded cat but has tranny hunting issues when hauling our 3 horse bumper pull horse trailer (loaded about 7k lbs).
For the extra couple of grand the 3500 is a no brainer.

Based on your post, 3500 no doubt. My next truck will be a 3500...

I want to thank everyone for there in put. After spending 3 hours at the dealer going back and forth between 2500 and 3500. The only real difference between the 2 was 800lbs in payload. Towing was about the same. Talking with dw, a srw 2500 (gas) will get us through the next bunch of years. At that point i will have 2 young teenager and I am going to need a 1ton drw to tow trailer with separate rooms.

He will be right at his payload limits with a Nissan and then in a few years when hes ready for a bigger trailer he will have to buy another truck again because the Nissan is still just a half ton on steroids with a low payload and a lightweight chassis.
3/4 ton or better if you are going to mess around with these bigger trailers.

The hitch weight of his current trailer is under 700 lbs. He'd has plenty of payload left and much of it can go in the camper. As for the future, he said maybe and I can find plenty of fifth wheels the Nissan can tow. Seems to me a half ton on steroids is really all he needs and right now the diesel would likely be less than the 3/4 and 1 ton gassers.

LOL. I did. Loved my 15 Dmax but found I never really used its capabilities towing my boat or Eagle 314bhds. There are about 100-150K people a year Nissan is targeting thru their market research that fit this category.

I would consider spending the money on the diesel. I have a Chevy 2017 Silverado 2500HD 2WD LT with the 6.0 that belongs to my employer that I use on occasion to tow. My trailer is 7500 dry. Uphill mileage is about 4-5 MPG, Flats are at best 10MPG but mostly 7-8. The Duramax or Cummins will pay for itself in fuel savings and allow you to grow if you buy a bigger rig.
My 2005 Ram 2500 5.9L HD 4X4 will get 14+ on hills and 17+ on the flats and 22-23 unladen. I do have some intake and exhaust mods, but I am also carrying oversize tires and wheels with a 4X4. If I had it to do again I would stay with stock sized wheels and no lift.
