New Truck Break In Before Towing
I will be taking delivery of a new 2016 Ford F150 soon. What type of break in (mileage) should I give before towing my 22fb (approx. 5k #'s)

I gave my 2016 F150 just about 1,000 miles but many people on the F150 forum say 500 or less.

I can remember when auto manufacturers told you to drive a new car/engine for a certain number of miles at under 40 Mph etc.
metalergy (sp?) has advanced so much since then that there is no longer any reason to break in engines.

The owner manual for my 2010 F150 had specific instructions for break-in before towing. I suspect your new TV will have instructions on that subject as well. My recommendation would be to follow those instructions.

500 for my RAM, but the break in isn't for the engine, its for the rear diff gears. At least that's what I read somewhere.

Wow. 500 miles for Ford and Dodge?. I put my Silverado directly to work hauling about 4000lbs of Northern Lite Camper. She has been a happy working truck ever since. She either packs the camper or tows the trailer. Hasn't given me and grief at all since April '08
Happy Camping

My '15 Chevy HD said no more than 55mph and no trailer for the first 500 miles then don't pull anything too heavy for the next 500. The differential gears are what need breaking in, the engine doesn't need it.
You should be able to find a copy of the owners manual at Ford's website, I looked up mine before I got my truck at Chevrolet's.

I think the main reason for break in miles now is for the rear end gears to wear in a bit, not so much the engine anymore as you said. There is a lot more heat generated in rear ends when under a big load than most of us realize.

My '06 GMC was 500 miles also. Rear diff break in was the reason.

Usually 500. All seals should be seated correctly by that time. It also gives the vehicle time to "learn" your driving habits.

On our new f150 the owners manual says 1000mi under the towing section, but in another place it was 500mi before pushing snow or towing over 50 miles per hour.

Here's another break-in procedure listed in my RAM owners manual that's specifically for the engine.
"While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the
limits of local traffic laws, contributes to a good break-in.
Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental
and should be avoided."
What this does is help seat the rings against the cylinder walls and prevent oil pass-by. I did this a lot when the engine was new, and now at 93k miles, the engine might use 1/2 quart of oil in 5000 miles.
