New upgrades to an old style Dual Cam
I recently discovered that the spring bars on my 12 year old Reese WD system were only rated 750 Llbs. With a tongue weight around 900-1000 lbs they were not cutting it. New spring bars are not available for that discontinued hitch head. So I ordered new 1200 lb spring bars, a new Reese 58167 trunnion bar head, and a new 15K ball and installed them today with this great January weather we are having. I have the old style 260001 Dual Cam sway control also from that old system. A couple years ago I bought a new one cheap on Ebay. So I also installed the "new old style" Dual cam kit while I was redoing everything else.(These have also been discontinued for the new 26002 system, so the Dual cam in the pics is not what you would get from a dealer or if you ordered one)
This particular system uses u-bolts to hold it to the frame as you will see in the pictures. There are some advantages and disadvantages to these. Advantages are there is no drilling in the frame, they can easily be adjusted, and they are self centering during the adjustment phase. You loosen the ubolts with tension on the bars, then drive 100 feet in a straight line. That self centers the cams. The u bolts are then tightened. But a disadvantage is that the propane tank tray can interfere with the ubolt installation which is what I ran into. Not a hard fix though, you simply remove the propane tank tray and install spacers under the tray and use longer bolts on the tray so it clears the ubolts, then reinstall. With the new spring bars being two inches longer then the old ones, the snap up and cam arm brackets all had to be moved back two inches. Since I had ubolts left over from the old system, I installed three on each cam arm bracket instead of the two that are supplied in the kit. Feel free to critique anything that does not look right as I am by no means an expert in WD installs.

Crabman, I know as a new to TT guy I should be respecful of SuperModerators but you did say to 'critique anything that didn't look right'.
So I clicked on your image and I am pretty sure your truck should not be hooked up that way. ;-)

Actually looks like a great install! Just a couple of double checks:
* "The passenger side" top-chain-link over the snap-up bracket hook is not seated correctly (6th link interfering).
* New ball mount bolts/nuts torqued to 300ft/lbs.
* With the TV in a tight turn the spring bar(s) shouldn't hit the Dual Cam frame U-bolt threads, and the spring bar knuckle shouldn't hit the lower part of the TT A-frame below the coupler. With the 1,200lb spring bar a little longer than your prior 750lb bar, sometimes new interferences can surface.
* 5-chain links under tension is fine as long as there aren't any spring bar interferences. If there are interferences, tilting the ball mount toward the TT and going to 6 links under tension will provide additional clearances.
* Snap-up bracket bolt don't over tighten, only 1/4 to 1/2 turn maximum to avoid bending. Watch that the snap-up bracket doesn't move on you during your first few camping trips, they tend move with some of the heavier tongue weights/spring bars, but yours may be just fine (I bolted mine to the frame).
With your new receiver and 1,200 spring bars your weight distribution consistency will be rock solid.

Good catch on the crooked link Bob!
I`ve got a friend who can torque everything at his machine shop once I`m sure about the setup. The instructions on the ball said 450 ft lbs, is that overkill?

The 450ft/lbs isn't overkill for the type of hitch ball fastener (#2 I believe) in question. Best to get it as close to 450ft/lbs as possible to insure the required "joint tightness". The 450ft/lbs is based on (percentage of) the established yield strength of the fastener in question.

Very interesting to see what the older Reese dual cams looked like. I sure like the new trunion WD with dual cam.

I had the old style years ago. Could be rather noisy on turns and backing but boy did they work good. Can of paint make everything look new again. Could even sit down with a cold one and polish each chain link nice and shiny

Yep, I invested 5 bucks in a can of black satin spray paint today, painted the A frame and older hitch components. Looks good now.

And now, after some spray paint, adjusting the hitch head back one more tooth, and some measurements and turning tests to insure clearances were correct the final outcome..........
