Here's a guideline example for you. Say you had 100 lbs sitting on the tongue, then you move that to be halfway toward the axle. You now have 50 lbs on the tongue and 50 lbs on the axle. This is a simplistic example, but the idea is to think of it in terms of a ratio. If it were 40% back from the tongue, it will be a 40% reduction of what's on the tongue. It gets a little interesting when you move the 100 lbs behind the axle. In this case, consider how far behind the axle it's located. Say 100 lbs is 5 feet behind the axle. This will have the effect as if there is 100 negative lbs at 5 feet in front of the axle. Again, think of ratios of the distance between the axle and the tongue to consider the effect this negative 100 lbs will have on the tongue. In these examples, when I say tongue, I mean right at the coupler. Just like a playground teeter totter.
