Overrated Reese?

Not what you think can a hitch be overrated for a TT? We just bought a 4800lb trailer with a 7K gross. I found a used Reese dual cam locally for s great price, but it is the 17K/1700 model. Will it change the performance if the WDH is that far overrated?

Thanks

Welcome to JOF

An overrated (within reason) WDH can be used in many applications as long as they are installed/adjusted correctly.

IMO a 7,000lb GVWR TT utilizing a WDH rated at 1,700lbs would not be my recommendation. Worst case loaded tongue weight would be 1,050lbs (15%) if the TT was loaded to it's GVWR.

I personally wouldn't want more then a 1,200lb rated WDH for a 7,000lb GVWR TT...., a 1,000lb rated WDH would be ideal especially if your loaded TT weight tends to be in the more common 6,000lb to 7,000lb weight range.

That's what I am reading. Appreciate it and thanks! Something like the husky centerline TS is looking awful good a time 1/3 the price of the big 3, and a Hensley is not even in the conversation...so expensive!

I went with the Centerline TS and it works well. Easy to adjust while you're getting the setup right. I haven't had experience with other systems but I have a similar TT to you and don't get any sway.
