That's a 12 year old truck. The repair is more (or near - not that many of that vintage on auto trader) than the truck's market value. Scrap it and buy a "new to you" truck with the money. Never spend more than the vehicle is worth for repairs.

Wow.. I hear ya. I guess if i was to blow the motor in my truck I would be doing the same thing you are "fix it" A new truck just wouldn't be in my budget. And like you I like my older truck. Good luck with the new engine.
Are you going to mod the new engine?

Indeed it has. Last new one was a 04 Chevy 1500 plain jane work truck for 16 grand with all the incentives at that time.

Bought the 04 2500 CC with 70K miles 3 years ago for 14K, less then 1/3 the cost of a similarly equipped new one.
(I did not factor in the exchange rate for Canadian/US dollars in my original post, thought they were close)

Still have both trucks...

This would be a tough choice for me, on one hand you can get a "new to me" 08-10 2500 LMM Silverado with reasonable miles for about $22-$25k or replace the engine like your planning. Granted replacing the truck is more $, however your overall cost basis will be lower since the $ you are about to spend is just added to you trucks total cost of ownership where if you bought a new to you truck the cost is really the difference between the value of you existing truck with a blown motor and the new to you truck.

I suspect you could $8-$10k USD pretty quickly for your truck then you end up with a newer truck for less than the cost to replace the engine on your existing.

If the new diesels weren't adding the emissions junk this would be very easy for me, even still I would likely just trade trucks and move on.

I am with you on no payments though, nothing I would do either way would involve financing.

Best of luck

How many km's did you have on it Seann ? Maybe breaking down to $$ per km will make it hurt a little less ? The other factor will be that provided the tranny and diffs are good, you will have a rebuilt D-max with 0.00 kms, which should have enough remaining in it to get you anywhere you want to go.

Ah yes...The wonderful world of diesels... Where everything is more expensive and the only real benefit to owning one is the additional power that comes with it.
Just got back one of our 6.0s today with 150000 miles on the clock. It only cost $14800usd to get it back up and running. We were lucky im told. Usually when a lifter fails in one of these engines, it takes it out. Ours only wiped out the cam. Maybe it would have been a little less if it weren't in a cutaway chassis, but all the same, a V10 will do everything that 6.0 will do and it will actually make 300000 miles without failure...

$16,634.224 later and that is after almost $7,000.00 in discounts... now if I can get another 11 years out of it.. $1,454.00 a year... by then I will probably be pushing up daisy's.

I agree with most of what you say but once you have experienced the power of a diesel, it makes V10's or any other gas engine substandard.
