Play between ball and tongue?

How much play is normal between the hitch ball and the tongue? I am setting up my weight distribution hitch and when I put the ball in the receiver there was a little bit of play up-and-down more so than front to back. This is with the ball in my hand not mounted to the WDH

That is normal. Unless your hitch on the truck is really worn, it will be fine. There are ways to shim it to reduce the free play but once it is under tension from the WDH, it'll never move.
