Push and Pull

I'm new to the towing game...My TV is a 2007 Toyota Sequoia pulling a brand new Jayfeather 2014 X23B. At times, when I'm towing, I get a little "push and pull" (not sway)...front to back...where it feels like I'm towing a trailer full of water that is splashing front to back...though I am not (all tanks are empty). I'm very inexperienced with the brake controller, so not sure how to adjust that to fix this. Or maybe my sway bar is too tight? My DW even noticed it and thought that I was purposely doing it with the gas pedal...and I wasn't applying gas or brake at the time. Any thoughts?

A little chugging fore and aft is normal, as the TT wheels and TV wheels ride over different areas of bumpiness in the road. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If the road is really smooth, and the towing feels smooth, then that will be an indicator for you.

Are you noticing this at highway speeds or in town driving? I set my controller very low when in town going slow and crank it up high on frwy driving for panic stops.

Sounds like the tongue could maybe be to light or to high. Make sure your tongue weight is at least 13% of your loaded weight. Also make sure the trailer is level when all hitched up, or just slightly pointing down.

With that said, some roads are just bad, not much you can do about that. I dont know what type brake controller you have, on mine I can change the boost level, in town its on the lowest setting, on the highway I kick it up to highest.

Could be a number of conditions creating the sensation you described...., such as road conditions, cargo placement, etc.. I will assume that you are utilizing a WDH.

Confirm that the HTT is towing level, or slightly nose down. Also, if your HTT's loaded "tongue weight" is lower than 10% of the HTT's loaded weight, this will create some unwanted motion between the TV and HTT. The loaded tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of the HTT's loaded weight. A WDH that isn't sized/adjusted correctly can also create unwanted towing behavior as well.

If you want to rule out any weight and WDH adjustment issues, take your loaded TV/HTT to a CAT scale. The following JOF CAT scale "how to" will walk you through the process:

TV shocks are something to look at.

Based on the feedback, I'm going to say it is normal based on in-town driving and bad road. Highway is fine and so are most rides/roads. I think it's a bad road causing some bumps, along with my inexperience. My WDH was just set up properly by the dealer, it's actually a great setup, so I don't think it's that. I'll keep an eye on it, but I think it's normal/minor. Thanks for the feedback all!

If you are running 6 year old shocks on you truck you could accelerated/decelerated by the up and down motion at the pivot point of your lash up. Good shocks prevent that.

Good point eldermike....I will get the shocks checked. Just bought the TV from a dealer...and though they did a lot of maintenance to it...I doubt they did shocks. Thanks

There is a bad section of road that I no longer take when towing. The truck bounces up and down to the point I cannot even do the speed limit. I believe they call the condition porpoising from a road that has dips where the road sections (concrete) meet. Not saying this is your situation but is something you might come across.
