RE: is 1/2 towing is a stretch my answer

I started a thread "is 1/2 towable a stretch? That thread is now closed so here is what we ended up getting.

Today the wife and I bought our new truck. We looked at all brand with a open mind and compared all the different options. Our first stop was the Chevy dealer and my wife found her the perfect truck LTZ 4WD Duramax very loaded and the dealer was ready to deal. So after a while we went to the Ram dealer if for no other reason just to check our Chevy deal. We found a Ram Big Horn which would have been a great choice. Anyway the Ram dealer just couldn't match the Chevys deal. There was $4500 different on equal trucks. We check the Ford dealer but didn't like any thing in stock and I didn't want to wait on a transfer. On the way home the Duramax driving 60 MPH we got 24.1 MPG.

BTW the Ram dealer didn't recommend the ECO Diesel if we are going to be towing our trailer lot

Thanks for all you recommendation.

Congrats! Welcome to the "D-Max" club. You will not be disappointed. You'll be getting up about two or three times every night to look at it no matter where it's parked. It's a guy thing.

Yea, its an interesting concept for a 1/2 ton diesel but the payload and tow rating are too low for most RVers.

It's been a little while since the first post of this thread. Are you still satisfied with the Chevy? I am considering a 2500 diesel myself. (best of all, the DW is on board too!)
I heard, starting with the 2014 model, the Duramax got a gas(diesel) mileage boost. DOes anyone know anything about that? For that reason I am looking at a used 2014 model but nothing earlier.

Xtruckerbob at least you got a honest salesman at the Dodge Dealer (doesn't happen often) It all boils down to the HP and Torque. The name "ECO" (not as stand alone) by certain mfg's that's what they put on V6 engines diesel or gas. All people who have driven V6's and special the ECO's (boost) they feel they have lots of power. But when you boost a V6 it has to be in the upper RPM range. I rather have the same power produced by a V8 with lower RPM, those two extra pistons keeps me longer in a certain range.........at least that's "my opinion"
Happy for you............"Good engine and good tranny"

The ecoboost engine produces more hp at lower rpms than either of the two V8 options at the time (5.0l and 6.2l).

peak torque is 420 lb-ft @ 2400 rpm, but the engine produces 90% of that from 1700-5000 rpm for an incredibly wide and flat torque curve.

With 8k lb trailer in tow, my truck will hold 60mph on a 5% grade in 4th gear @ 2700 rpm, a very comfortable place to be. All this at 10,000 ft elevation.

with a 6-7% grade it drops to third at around 3300 rpm

I see the 2015 F150 with the aluminum body as over 2600 lb payload capacity if equiped with the max payload option. Awful tempting.

Wow, that's 200 lbs more than my 2012 F-250 PSD.

KYCAMPER, We just home today from a several days at Poverty Point State Park. I was very impressed at the truck (The truck in named Huey) it pulled great. When we pulled with our Tahoe it felt like the trailer and Tahoe were fighting for control. Even when my wife was driving you could feel movement or tension between the two though the passengers seat. With the truck it felt smooth and effortless even when my wife was driving. It wasn't very far so the mileage will probably change but we got 12.3 and coming home we got 11.4 with a hard head wind. I like my Chevy diesel and I think extra price the optional Allison and diesel are worth the money regardless what you pull. Just the truck seems to get 17 combine and 20 on the road. My opinion is: After I retired my wife and I bought a freightliner and got our authority and started living my child hood dream. We ran 150,000 miles per year for 9 years Till I was deployed to Iraq. So I feel I know when a trailer pulls good or not. The Chevy pulls and drives as well as any of our big trucks in comparision to load. KYCAMPER I think you will not be disappointed.

On Youtube there several videos of the 4 truck makers pulling 10,000 pounds up to the Eisenhower tunnel on I-70 west on Denver which is 11155 feet. All the trucks were tested by independent magazine. All the did a remarkable job but the EcoBoost did an surprising run. It is worth watching. Personal I let the term "6 cylinder" get to me and could over over come the fact it was a 6 cylinder. I feel I more is better so we went with the Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 LTZ.
