Seann, I know this is especially true in Canada. A friend from Saskatchewan was pulling trailers from the factory to dealers in Canada. He was checked at the border with a large load on a flatbed and had to unhook right there. They wouldn't let him tow it in with his truck.

boatman-- I was looking through 2011 GM specs and can't find a optional tow package with 3.08's.( that would be standard rear gear and you can tow 5k max) Have you put the truck on jack stands (both rear wheels) and turned the drive shaft, with the truck in gear and counted 3+ revolutions to 1 for a tire. Reading info on other truck forums, it seems the gm stickers don't reconize some options like optional gear ratios. It would seem that if your sticker listed an optional tow package you would have 3.42 rear gears and if you had the max tow package you would have the max cooling package and posssibly 3.73's. Before spending big buck please confirm what you have. just trying to help Larry

There should also be a code on the equipment sticker in the glove box telling which rear you have along with other options IIRC.

On edit, found this on the Silverado forum. Rear gear codes, not sure if this covers all years or not. This was from 2010, 1500.
GT5 Rear axle, 4.10 ratio
GT4 Rear axle, 3.73 ratio
GU4 Rear axle, 3.08 ratio
GU5 Rear axle, 3.23 ratio
GU6 Rear axle, 3.42 ratio

I agree with some of the others. I don't believe GM would put a towing package on a 3.08 geared truck. If it truly came with a towing package (frame hitch, trans cooler) I believe it should have at least a 3.42 and more likely a 3.73.

Like Crabman said, check the RPO codes in the glove box. Or there are VIN decodes available online that will tell you all build options if your truck.

As a mechanic, I can tell you that gear changes involve disassembling and reassembling the axle, and the labor time of setting up the new gear clearances, which is generally more expensive than swapping out the whole undisturbed axle for another one of the desired ratio. So - I agree with Boss Wagon on making the swap.

They can offer the towing package with the 3.08 gears because of the 6 speed transmission in the newer trucks. The ratio for towing with the new transmission and 3.08 gear is equal to or better than the 4 speed with 3.73 and 4.10 gears. Check this link for comparisons.

I stand corrected. I guess a 6 speed with a 3.73 would be a real puller.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I am positive it has the tow pkg with trans cooler. It is a 6 speed trans and is rated as is at 6800 towing capacity,

I don't think 3.73s are even an option on this truck.

If you get serious about changing the rear gear, check out www.performancetrucks.net. There is a lot of good info over there. Someone from your area could recommend a good shop that could do the swap for a decent price.
