Sherline tongue scale

I was looking at these on Amazon....kind of pricey for a unitasker. Why couldn't a clever fellow make one of these in the shop, do the math and accomplish the same result? I'm thinking about finding a pancake cylinder in the scrap pile, measuring the piston diameter, fill with oil and install a pressure gauge.

So if my cylinder has a 3" piston then the area would be 0.7854 d squared=7.0686 square inches. If my tongue weight is 500lbs then the gauge would read 70.735364 psi.

This will be my next G-job! We have a 5S event coming up which means brand new goodies going in the trash!! Should be a fun project.

Post results with pics. A tongue scale a useful device..., use my Sherline often.

I too have a Sherline. Makes me comfortable when I hitch up knowing exactly what % tongue weight I'm working with.
