The sale price seems too good (?)

I might be looking at a used 2005 Ford F250 Lariat Supercrew (FX package), 6.5' bed and the 6.8 Liter engine. It has 85,000 miles on it. The pricetag is $15,900. This vehicle, being sold at a Philadelphia suburbs Ford dealer, appears to be in very good shape based on the pictures. The biggest drawback for me is the exterior color, red, but not enough to not consider it. When comparing this vehicle to other similar vehicles (Autotrader), the price seems for this one seems to be a little bit too good...similar vehicles are selling in the $19K-$20K range.

I was told by the salesperson that it is "certified" (from what I understand, this simply means that it passes a Ford inspection checklist). The CarFax indicates it had 2 previous owners, both from the same region where it is for sale.

Can anyone offer me questions/visual inspection points I should ask/perform if I decide to look at it?

I'd look at body lines personally and under the hood at fender bolts and such to see if these parts have been removed...could indicate previous damage

I had a similar situation when looking for my tv, I found a truck same year and equipment for $10,000 less. I called the dealer and requested to speak to the previous owner who, according to the dealer didn't need it any more. The previous owner called me and told me he bought it at an auction and rebuilt it. It was written of as a result of a collision and he rebuilt it for resale.
I called an auto recycling friend of mine and was given an education about these type of vehicles. In Ontario, Canada the vehicle ownership tag has an indication right on it that tells you if the vehicle has been written off previously. It has the word Branded: and then 0 or none, anything else indicates a write off and may not be insureable and other honest dealers will not touch it. So be aware!

My father in law is Vice President at Mc Cafferty Ford in Mechanicsburg which is owned by Todd Burch and Fred Beans himself. He has worked for Todd and Fred for sometime now and i know they run a top notch organization. I can't speak for the truck itself as any used vehicle could have underlying problems but their vehicle are gone over thoroughly so that the customer does not have a bad experience. Price wise, they probably dropped it due to being in inventory for so many days and with gas prices reaching almost $4 a gallon maybe a reason for most people not to buy a V-10 but for someone needing a good TV it would be a good deal. At that good price buy an extended warranty along with it then you would be covered. Good luck!

The sale price seems too good (?)

I checked out the truck this morning. All in all the interior is in very good shape. There is a rust hole in the rear fender just above the tire. That led me to inspect the undercarriage. Not good. A significant amount of rust. To the point where I could break pieces off. In this case, it is evident to me why the price is lower. I will pass on this one has I am very uncomfortable with the thought of pulling something heavyweight with something that has this much rust. Click image for larger version

Not always. Picked up a 97 Taurus GL 133k miles, 3.0l vulcan v-6 for $400 and it runs/drives like a champ. Yup it has some rust underneath but nothing that is a show stopper.

x2. In 2008, the '05 fully-loaded Pathfinders were going for $22k-$24K with 40K+ miles on them. I found one for $17K with just 18k miles on it; thought it was too good to be true, went to look at it, and was sold. It's towed our campers and hauled our family over 100K miles now and never a major issue; I lost money on the extended warranty because we never had to use it.

In 2006, also bought a 2004 G35 with 40K miles for $18K when they were averaging $21-23K. I drove it until 100K miles, and gave it to my brother, who drove it up to 160k miles.

There are deals to be had if you're patient.

In the case of this deal though, yeah, I'd walk away too (unless you're really handy). The hole in the fender will only get worse....

It's an '05 in snow country. Rust on the frame would not scare me in the slightest. The body will rot away long before the frame is too weak to tow with.

That rust alone hole however would have had me walk away. Lots of pristine vehicles out there, be patient.
