Tire Dry Rot
These photos show some of the cracks in the sidewall near the bead of my Bridgestone Duravis M700 tow vehicle tires. The MFG date says they are 5 years old, only 20k miles on them, lots of tread left. The local Bridgestone dealer told me not to worry about them, but I’m thinking I'm going to replace them anyway. Wouldn’t you?

Yup. Dry rot almost always gets you before wear. I always changed mine on my tool trailers every 3 years.

Noticed the same issue with my TV last summer while on vacation, I stopped at two tire dealers and they told me the same thing. “Don’t worry about it, it is not enough cracking to be of any issue”. I have to admit I did change them out this past fall. I just feel better knowing that if I can do a little preventative maintenance, I will to avoid having to fix/replace something when inconvenient, such as on the side of the road.

The cost of the damage inflicted by a blowout on the back of a dually far outweighs the cost of new tires. I monitor my tires closely.

5 years old? they are time expired.. REPLACE them. Tread depth means nothing at that age.. just google tire age to read about it.. Michelin has some good stuff on tire age on their web site.

On my previous TT, I changed the original tires after 2 years, then 3 years later I had to change them again.... and the cracks were worse than that!
I was told to steer away (if possible) from chinese tires... I had been recommended some GoodYear Marathon as they would last a little longer than the other cheap one I had bought....but they cost double the price!

Sean,
I fully plan to replace them. What I find unusual, is the tire dealer tells me they will be fine. It seems Jaygiven was told the same story by two other tire shops for his tires. Maybe this is why we see so much tire debris on the side of the highway?

Thats exactly why you see so much tire debris. You may get lucky for a while, but not forever
What are you replacing with?

I'm leaning toward Michelin LTX M/S2, because they seem to have good reviews on Tirerack.com. They are currently recalling these tires, in sizes different from what I would need. The recall has me wondering though.....hmmm
If not those, would go with Firestone Transforce. Previously had the Transforce HT, and was quite happy with them. Transforce AT is another option, but may not have the straight line stability of the HT version. Straight line highway driving is most important for me.

I had looked at the Michelins and I was thinking about those- but had the same concerns about the recalls. Compound is the same as are other materials no matter the size. Had BFG AT on my previous TV and can't say enough good things about them for my purposes. Mild off road, deep snow in winter, and towing. They were awesome and I had 62000 on them with life left. I switched to a Goodyear Duratrac this time (E range- same as the BFs) based on all the positive feedback online over numerous forums for all the criteria i need them to meet, and after letting the bake for about 4000km, I am fully prepared for a horrifying experience. Never again. Going back to the BFs as soon as these wear out or cause me any white knuckle rides. At 2000 bucks for the 4 corners though, I'm kinda stuck until they give me valid reason to put them into a tire shredder.

Do any of you have a good method to help extend the life? Do the covers and tire dressing products really work?

My view on life span of tires goes this way.....use it or lose it. A tire which is run on the road at least a few miles everyday, and a lengthy run every week or two, will last longer than one sitting still. Has something to do with promoting the migration of compounds within the tire. IMHO, covering and dressing products do nothing to change this fact.

Today I got a set of Michelin LTX M/S2 for the TV to replace the OEM tires in the OP picture. The springtime sales event helped a bit with the price. Driving home on the highway, they sure rode alot nicer and more quiet. I think I'm going to like these tires.

I had Dunlops on my TV. The were OEM and had 6 yrs on them. I searched and reviewed nearly every tire out there. I finally chose the Falken Wildpeaks because they seemed to best match what I wanted. They're made for medium off road and highway and handle and brake great on wet, icy and snow covered roads. Its been about 6 mos. since I put them on and I couldn't be happier. I found a good sale so the price was a little less than half of what the similar BFs, GYs, F-stone and Mich were going for.

Yep, those tires are junk and need to be replaced. How much is your life worth?

The Michelin tires on my Dodge did that. (only 3 years old) I really didn't worry about general driving but I did change them before making our fall migration to the South. I didn't want to tow the trailer with them.

Clutch, that's interesting. From comments here and elsewhere, I think all tires today do that quicker than what used to be the case years ago. Poor quality materials, not enough anti-UV additives I think.
