Tow Pin connection

I've noticed my trailer wire pin connection is somewhat loose. I looked inside the connection and see a small piece of metal around the pin that looks a little smashed in. Not sure if it is supposed to be like that. Take a look.Click image for larger version

Hard to tell but on the left side of the main pin the metal is pushed away from the pin, and on the right its flush up against it. When I plug it in it connects, but is loose and doest take much to pull it out.

The cover of the connector on the TV should swing over and lock it in. Keeps it from backing out.

The cover from mine on my tow vehicle just sits on top. Doesn't "lock it in."

I'm trying to figure out the purpose of that thin metal shroud around the main power connection. Like I said it looks like one section is bent in towards the power connection. So I am guessing this is why it feels not as snug or like it can gobin farther. I'm debating on taking a flat head screw driver and trying to pry that shroud back a little to see if I get a snug fit.

That or you can pinch the other 6 connectors tighter together. Or check the pins in the connector on the truck. Maybe can widen them a little to make a snugger fit.

Should definitely be a snug fit.

You're towing with a RAM right? (basing this on the key-fob you're holding). If that's the case, on my RAM, the plug cover is spring loaded. When you lift up on the cover, you plug the plug in and let the cover down on top and that's what "locks" it in. The plug has a catch on it that the cover sits in.

Other than that, I don't see anything overtly wrong with your plug. Just another little tip: I put a little dielectric grease in/on my plug, and that makes it a bit easier and protects the plug from corrosion.

Also, what are you referring to as the "main power connection"? The middle pin is for reverse lights. The "main" 12V power pin is in the 11 o'clock position when you're looking with the "key" (that bump on top of the plug that "keys" it to the outlet") at the 12 o'clock position.

Apologizes, I am referring to the middle pin. If you look closely do you see the thin metal around that pin? Yes I am towing with a Ram and have the spring loaded latch.

Are you thinking that the metal you're referring to may be the problem? If so, I don't think that would do it. Of course I'm not there and can't physically look at it. Does the metal look crushed beside the center pin?

Yes, it does look crushed. Is it possible I could short something out in the camper if I stick a flat screwdriver in there?

I think I can see what you are talking about but can't say if it looks damaged. If its loose or damaged and causing concern why not just replace the plug itself and be done with it?

Nah, just disconnect the battery first just to make sure.

Question, how does the truck side connector look? The center pins are still there right? Just can't figure out what could possibly be surrounding that center pin. It should be clear..

All connectors are there no issues with the truck side. Not sure was hoping some Jayco owners could look at their pin and see if they have something surrounding their center pin.

I just looked at my connector and there's nothing surrounding the center pin, except a few cobwebs that I cleaned out. I'm able to see down to where the pin mounts into the plastic, which is flat and shiny.

Take a look at the truck side of the the connector. You might be able to gently squeeze the middle pin contact tabs together a bit to tighten up the fit of the connector.

I looked closely at your pictures, and to me it looks like plastic shavings from the plug itself surrounding the middle pin- maybe a minor manufacturing defect. It wouldn't hurt anything to take a small nail and try to pry or scrape it out. Doing that might allow you to seat the plug more deeply into the receptacle. The center pin is just molded into the plastic plug, so there wouldn't be anything that could be damaged by giving that a try.

Thanks for looking. I will have to inspect this further when I tow it back to the house. Not sure what is in there. If you enlarge eithier of my pictures and zoom in, you can see it pretty well.
