Mt 4cylinder Tacoma 2.4 L pulled my pop-up at 1550lbs fine.
My 6 cylinder 4.0L pulls my TT at 3500lbs fine.

Either one should do the job. Depends on what other uses you plan or if you want room to grow.

If I had it to do over again, I would have went with a V8, it was only about 1-2 mpg difference.

JMHO,
Doug

I would pick the one with the best transmission. Not sure on Mopar if they have lighter duty transmissions on the 6 but I would check.

The bigger the motor the better the mileage IF you are not taxing it to the max..

Wish my '02' 6.0L Vortec met that condition ...., I bet some 6 cylinders towing 1,000lbs do much better then my TV unloaded

I have a 4.7 dodge Dakota quad cab an pull a x17A it's about 3,000 lbs pulls great! Get about 10mpg normally I get 18-20 mpg. But no issues pulling plenty of power. Would defiantly go w/ V-8.

Exempt when it's time to make payments or fill up.

The 3.6 V6 is an excellent engine with the new 8 speed auto and would do very well with light weight trailer here. Ales a good daily driver when not towing too.

As others have stated, real world mpgs are probably 1 or 2 off from the v-6 to the v-8. I'd go for the v-8 if I was buying a Ram.

The engine braking on a 5.7 will be much better as well.

Steve76,

We have the x17z and tow it with a 2009 Ram 1500 Hemi Quad Cab. We also tow a 22 ft. boat. Great truck and we're getting about 11-12 MPG on the highway with the TT. It's smooth and has power to spare. With the anti sway hitch which came with the pre owned x17z you hardly feel the TT back there. Get the Hemi you won't regret it.

Re: tow vehicle

The hemi would be my choice, but I am a bit biased

The pentastar will perform admirably for what you want if that's the route you choose. Mated to that 8 speed, it has some pretty impressive abilty for a NA 6. I love that 8 speed, but it's tied to a Hemi in mine.
