TPMS... which one

So, back in june we were on our way home with our Forest River Sierra and had a wheel shear off all 6 wheel studs and take a hike into the woods on the side of the highway. Not my fault, trailer was plagued with gremlins which is why I got rid of it. Thank God my buddy was following behind and saw the whole thing unfold, stopped and got my tire/wheel, and laughed his butt off after we got back on the road. Until 60 miles later he got his 2nd flat.

On my way down to southern Florida for a hunting trip we noticed a guy in a Dmax pulling a 5er and smoke just starting to come from the right side of his trailer. He was completely oblivious, but we got his attention and he safely got pulled over. Hopefully there wasn't much damage.

BTW, what is it with flat tires and Florida?? Out of all the states I've driven thru, Florida has to be the worst for flat tires on the side of then highway.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about putting TPMS on my trailer and getting the signal somehow up to the truck. Guess what?? Google says there are kits out there available for just this! Imagine that! Don't I feel stupid. Not like having one on my Sierra would have helped that problem because the tire didn't go flat, but if it lost the signal when it took off I would have immediately pulled over to see what was going on. I'm finding these kits for anywhere from $150 - $450.

1. What are you guys out there using/ what's a good one to get?
2. North Point is supposed to be in the luxury line of Jayco trailers, why don't these come on them as standard equipment or at least as an option?

I use TireMinder. There is a booster INCLUDED and I have mine mounted on the A-Frame beside the battery box rails.

I believe mine is the TST 507 but could be mistaken, it may be one of its relatives. I chose the one with the flow thru air and now wish I hadn't. I find its slow/difficult to fill the tires with air. I don't have, nor need, the extra repeater/booster; it works as is.

X2 for TireMinder from Minder Research.

I have a motorhome and usually tow a car. 6 sensors on the MH and 4 on the towed vehicle. They have alerted us several times before we had a catastrophic failure. My MH is almost 40 feet long and I was getting intermittent signal dropouts despite using the supplied signal booster. I contacted Minder Research while on a trip, they walked me through troubleshooting the issue and we jointly determined I needed another booster due to my overall length. They immediately sent one to my home absolutely free of charge. After I installed it where they recommended I have not had a single dropout. I cannot say enough good things about their customer service!

+2 on the TST 507RV. Mine has worked great all year but I also use it without a repeater, but it is available from TST.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

TST 507 here also with no repeater. I have the standard sensors, non-flow through, and I'm very happy with them. Their batteries are user replaceable so I carry spares and replace 1 when the dash monitor tells me one is low and needing replacing.

TST507 here as well. Installed it on our 2017 Eagle TT which has a published length of 39' 3" and don't need a repeater either.

TST510RV in use for over 4 years.

No repeater needed on my long rig and truck.

The TST and TireMinder seem to be the popular choices. I have owned my TM for about 5 years and wouldn't be without it.

Flow through TST 507 here. As for a departed wheel and tire, I don't think this system would have helped you. I have dropouts every once in a while and it can take quite a while before the dropout gives me an alarm. Low or high pressure or low or high temp will alarm immediately but not a dropout. It takes quite a while for the system to decide that a dropout has really occurred.

Yes, it seems like a TST and Tire minder are popular here. I'll have to take a look at both and see which one suits me the best. It'll be 5 months before the trailer comes back out again so I got time to make the money and figure out which one.
Thanks to all for the replies!!

Do you put sensors on the TV as well, or just the trailer?

My opinion is that if you have a newer vehicle with a factory-installed TPMS system, an aftermarket system might be redundant. But some factory systems don't give specific tire readouts, they just tell you something is amiss with one of your tires. Other vehicle systems I have seen do give individual tire readings. And over a certain GVWR they are not required. So it is up to you and your specific wants/needs.

Thanks Rob. I was curious if I'd be shorting myself if I just got four sensors for the trailer. I have an older truck. It has a cassette deck in the radio. No tpms. I'm definitely going to purchase one of these. Just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on monitoring the truck too. If it's necessary

Same here, imo I would like to know actual temps ,pressure and which tire for comparison.

Additional 4 or 6 sensors won't break the bank.

I know when I purchase mine I'm getting enough for the trailer, truck tires, and my air bags for my rear suspension, as stated above, the extra sensors aren't that much more.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a question for other TST 507 users. Do you have a tough time sometimes reading the monitor when driving in bright sunlight? I do and I have a small LED flashlite on the dash to grab so I can read it. I emailed TST about the issue and they said put a piece of black tape over the sensor and that will turn on the backlite. Haven't tried it yet but that doesn't sound right to me. What's your opinion...can you read yours?

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Going to order mine tomorrow. Looking for a Black Friday deal. One question that came to mind was do these sensors effect the balance of your wheels. After I install it should I get them rebalanced?
