That's a tough one Steve. I love the looks of the Rams where the Tundra is pretty plain jane to me. I went with the Tundra originally as it has a much stronger drivetrain than the Ram 1500's offer. Mine only has about 1400# of cargo capacity. The Tundra 5.7 motor is a beast and pulls hard all day long with the 4.30 gears. the 10.5" rear end, stout transmission,8.7" front diff and monster sized brakes all swayed me to trade a 2003 Ram 2500 hemi for it. I never looked back until my wife ordered the larger camper last year. I am at 15,480# combined and the truck is rated to 16,000 combined. I can feel I am at the limit.

If I was to buy a 1/2 ton right now, I would go Ram. Go with the Hemi (or eco diesel after test drive maybe) 8 speed auto, 3.92 gears and posi rear end. Get as high a cargo capacity as you can. Maybe the air ride is higher...not sure. I really like the looks and styling of the Rams which is part of the reason for ordering a 2500 Cummins.

For me, I wouldn't touch a RAM eco-diesel. The tow limitations on a decently spec'd eco-diesel are under 8K lbs so unless you KNOW you're never going to need more than 6-7K towing capacity, I'd go with something else. Toyota makes a good vehicle, but the Tundra's a little long in the tooth compared to the newer domestics and Nissan Titan. I like the 5yr/100K mile warranty on the new Titan!

I just happened to be looking at the new Tundras and they have 38 gal standard on all but the base model vs the 26 gal I have. Wish they had that a few years ago.

Heck if you're looking to upgrade the truck anyway. Play it safe and get a good new or used Ram 2500-3500 with the Cummins and you're done for a very long time. That will pull anything your heart could ever desire. Been there done that with a 1/2 ton and never again!

For me it is the RAM, the 5.7 Hemi handles our 267BH real fine.

I have a little experience towing with both the Tundra and a Ram 1500. My cousin and I jointly own an enclosed 20' trailer that we bought to haul our Harleys. I've towed this trailer with both his 2010 Tundra and my 2014 Ram 1500. Both trucks handled this trailer loaded with 4 bikes without any problem. His 2010 Tundra has been flawless from a reliability stand point. The only downside to the Toyota that has been mentioned in this thread is the mpg and small gas tank. I can give you a little more feedback about my 2014 Ram 1500. It is a Limited with the 5.7L Hemi, 8 speed transmission, air suspension and the 3.92 gearing. My truck has 57,000 miles and only issue has been the backup camera that was replaced under warranty. As mentioned in this thread the biggest short coming of the Ram 1500s are the payload capacity-especially when you get into the higher optioned trucks. When I was shopping for a new truck the Ram offered the best overall value for me. I did not own a travel trailer at the time and I probably would have been looking at the 3/4 ton category if I would have had a crystal ball. I haven't towed our 24MBH yet so I can't comment about how it does, but I don't anticipate it having issues with a good WD setup. My household has owned one or more Toyota vehicles for the last 26 years. I started out in the mid size pickups and my wife has had a couple of 4Runners and a couple of Lexus LX470s. They've pretty much been bullet proof and held their values well. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Had a friend get rid of the Tundra because of the unloaded mileage. Just something to consider. I'm sure towing you would like it.

I think any half ton would give you a good tow. Just depends on which set up you like.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for all your replies. In plan on ordering a truck tomorrow. Looks like it will be neither truck. I am getting a GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab. Max tow package with 6.2 engine and 8 speed transmission. 4x4 as wel. Payload is close to 1900 pounds and tow rating is 12,000 pounds. I hope this truck will do the job.

Steve.

Well done. I had a 2003 Sierra Denali before my Ram. Man I miss the Quadra Steer on that truck. I tried to buy another in 2014, but couldn't get the price where I wanted it.
