Tundra Towing 29QBH?

We are looking at a new Tundra with the following specs.

How do you think the Tundra will handle the 29QBH with the following specs?

We will NEVER be traveling with water in any of our tanks and all of our driving is under 60 miles away across flat, flat land. No hills at all.

Do you know the GCVWR? That is the combined rating for both TV and TT.

Just on the surface, it sounds like you may be overdoing it. Take the curb weight, add you and your other passengers plus cargo you carry. To that you will have to add the actual tongue rating (not the dry hitch weight). I could see you approaching 7k lbs pretty quickly.

I was figuring as much. What about the 29L. It has a very similar style to the 29QBH.

That's getting better... seriously, the best way to determine this stuff is to get your TV loaded and head to a CAT scale. If you can get a test tow before buying, you can save yourself a lot of grief.

Once you know the actual vehicle weight of your truck AND what its combined weight rating is, you can make a sound determination of what will likely work.

At the end of the day, you want to be safe and confident that you can pull it.

Hello, I was curious about your question as I own a Tundra 4x4 CrewMax 5.7L and just purchased an X18D.
The CGW/CGVWR is 15,300lbs and actually increases with the 2door models. But 15,300 is the lowest combined weight.
So looking at the numbers you provided, you could tow this easily(empty), but once you start adding stuff to either TT or TV you could exceed the maximum.

I own a 2007 Crewmax and tow a 304BHK. Certified weight of trailer, propane and battery was 6800lbs. I dont know what all my weights are, but what I can tell you is the truck handles it great. No troubles what-so-ever. Very pleased, only bummer is the bad gas mileage, 9.5 at best.

The limiting factor with many half ton trucks is payload capacity, because the "loaded" TT tongue weight is subtracted from the TV's payload capacity.

The Tundra in question has a curb weight of 5,645lbs which includes a 150lb driver, full fuel, and all other fluids. As Mike mentioned, now you add the combined weights of passengers, TV options, and cargo. Let's "assume" 350lbs for passengers + 100lbs TV options + 200lbs in cargo = 650lbs. So 5,645lbs + 650lbs = 6,295lbs "assumed" loaded TV weight.

A Tundra 7,000lb GVWR - 6,295lbs loaded weight = 705lbs remaining for a "loaded" TT tongue weight. Manufactures recommend the loaded tongue weight to be 10% to 15% of the loaded TT weight.

Jayco 29QBH: 6,745lbs UVW + 250lbs (added for actual ship Weight) + 150lbs (dealer stuff; battery, WDH, etc.) + 400lbs cargo (conservative) = 7,545lbs loaded 29QBH. The 29QBH recommended loaded tongue weight = 755lbs to 1,132lbs (10% to 15%)

Jayco 29L: 5,365lbs UVW + 250lbs (added for actual ship Weight) + 150lbs (dealer stuff; battery, WDH, etc.) + 400lbs cargo (conservative) = 6,165lbs loaded 29L. The 29L recommended loaded tongue weight = 616lbs to 925lbs (10% to 15%)

"Ideally" the loaded tongue weight should be 13% to 15% for enhanced TV handling on TT's with lengths like the 29QBH and 29L.

Again, my "math" was based on some weight assumptions, so feel free to adjust accordingly. Also, to confirm the "Ship Weight" of a given TT, look for a yellow sticker on the TT.

Maybe you can find something similar to this for your Toyota. This is a link for the 2012 Ram 1500 and as you can see from the charts as you scroll down, depending on cab size, box length, engine & gear ratio there is a towing range from 5700lbs to 10,250lbs.

In one example, 2 identical trucks on the chart with the only difference being the rear end gear ratio. The one with a 3.55 can tow 8500lbs and the one with a 3.92 can tow 10,000lbs.

Many factors to consider.

Is this a 5.7 model with a tow package? If so, that 9K tow capacity is the new J2807 specs. Non of the other manufactures are using it yet. A Tundra 5.7L and tow package is rated at 10.4K without the new spec.

I do think you will still be over by a little bit. I think the truck will handle it, but if you get in a wreck and get put on the scales, it might come back to bite you.

And I think you will see a lot of people having a fit if they go back and reissue weights for all older vehicles. That would put more than 50% of everyone with a half ton over the weight limit with anything bigger than a hybrid.

We're still shopping around and are possibly looking at a 2010 Tundra rated for about 9,800 towing I believe. We are also looking at the 29SQB greyhawk. 5,370 dry, 540 dry tongue and 7,500 gross. I don't thik we will ever come close to 7,500 because we never travel with water. We only keep a few gallons in the tanks just to keep them wet. As a result, I think the gross weight would be in the neighborhood of 6,100 or so. Just a really rough guess there.

It would be four people in the truck. Two adults totaling about 330 lbs and 2 kids under five. The bed of the truck would have too much stuff. At most a sall BBQ grill, 20# propane tank and either a poopie trailer or firewood. With the way the CG's are set up around here it's not often we would need both the poopie trailer and firewood.

What are your thoughts on this?

You should be fine with that setup. I have a Tundra myself, and love it.

I'm pulling an Outback 227RL, around 8K lbs loaded with a 2011 Tundra, 5.7L, tow package, and 4:30 rear end. It pulls all day long at 2000 RPM with 6th gear locked out, no problems. Like others, the gas mileage is the only drawback at 10-11 MPG towing, but the truck is also a daily drive so it meets my needs fine. For a 1/2 ton truck, I wouldn't have anything but a Tundra.

Honestly, the mileage is not bad for a gasser with this much hp and torque, its the range for really long trips is my only nit pick. It has a 26 gallon tank, 6 of which is for reserve at empty. If you fill at 1/4 tank, you will be filling around 160-170 miles. Most new diesels are only doing 12-13 towing big loads now. Myself, I like to get out and stretch my legs after two and half hours driving anyway.

I have a 2011 Tundra with all the goodies. Big engine, tow pkg., etc., etc. I pulled the hills of eastern Ohio last week on I77 at around 65mph. Everything did great! Am going again next week but plan on 1 change. I am going to knock the speed down about 5-10 mi. per hr.

If I am in a hurry, what the heck am I doing with a camper.
