There was a member here with the tag name Clutch who used a Dodge 3500 diesel for towing a 33RLDS, but he also carried an ATV in the bed of the truck. Although, come to think of it, that may have been a 330RLDS. Not sure if there's a difference.

Re: What are you towing your 33RLDS with?
I am looking around...found a
2003 Dodge Ram 2500
5.7 Hemi
5 speed auto 45rfe
4.10 gear
Tow package
Towing Max 10,800
47,000 miles
The age gives me a little concern and was wondering if I needed a little more wiggle room with the weight? Also considering a diesel.

I don't think you would regret a diesel. I am a newer convert to diesel and I love my Duramax.
Sure, the diesel costs a bit more to purchase, but worth a bit more when you sell it. Maintenance is slightly higher mainly becase the fluid capacities are greater than a gasser. Fuel per gallon is higher, but milage is better. Most importantly a diesel is designed with towing in mind, and IMO the towing experience with a diesel is exceptional...especially if you tow in the mountains.

I'll toss this out. I have owned everything from a Cheverlet LUV in diesel to my current 2500 Dodge. I will own nothing but a diesel. As a matter of fact, I'm waiting to see a Jeep with the V-6 diesel, and my wife's car will be gone. You can see in my signature what I tow, and going to Mackinaw City, MI from Urbana, IL, I averaged 13.8 MPG. You won't do that with a gas vehicle. And I don't run that fast, 62-65MPH is about tops. So, for me, a diesel is tops. I get 19 MPG on the freeway not pulling the trailer, and 15 in town. That is as good as my wife's V-6 Highlander. So, I'm a diesel fan. Nobody can talk me out of one.
Safe travels,

I tow with a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT CC with a Duramax Diesel. It pulls like a train and I get 12-14mpg towing a 8000lb travel trailer and my 14ft fishing boat together. In Ontario we are allowed to pull a combination as long as we stay under 73 feet. I'm 72 feet with my outboard motor taken off I had a gas truck before which was workin pretty hard and then tried a buddies diesel.......I'll never go back to a gas truck as long as I'm pulling a RV. You won't regret a diesel.

Thanks for the replies....starting to lean heavily towards a diesel. Cummins or Duramax? Any years I should steer clear of?

Boy, will that open a can of worms!!!!! If Ford would make a truck, with the Cummins engine, and the Allison Transmission, that would be a truck! I think every truck has their strong and weak points. For example, Ford trucks had problems with rear main seals, and cam shaft sensors. Cummins had problems with transmissions in their 04-06 trucks. GMC had problem with injector pumps at first. I think by now, all the problems should be solved. I would suggest you research them all, drive them all, then pick out which is best for you. I have a friend who has a Duramax, and loves it. He likes my Dodge because it pulls harder then his truck. But, his truck rides better then mine. Good luck.

Congratulations on the new TT. Soon, I predict, we will be congratulating you on a new TV too. The 33RLDS is a lot of trailer to be tugged around with a 1/2 ton gasser.

Yes, its the 3/4 ton with the 496 big block. Also have the 4.10 gears which bring the towing capacity to 12,000 Lbs !!

That certainly makes a lot more sense. Maybe it will be a ways off before we are congratualting you on a new TV :-)

How did it tow for you? Do you have a weight distribution hitch...I am assuming you do.
