This may be me being OCD but payload is like max towing weight and not of much real value.
If your payload is 2k# and you have a 5er with a pin weight of 1800# you are probably overloading the rear axle. The 2k# is payload for both axles and the pin weight goes mostly on the rear axle.
IMHO the weights of the front/rear axles from a scale is the starting point to selecting a unit that will not exceed the GAWR of either axle on the TV.
As an example:
The CAT Scale reports the steer axle is 4500# and drive axle is 1200#, the sticker says Front /Rear GAWR is 4900# and 4900# respectively. That means we could add 400# to the front axle and 3700# to the rear without exceeding tha axle weight ratings. If the 5th has a pin of 4k# then the Rear is over by 300#.
My example is for a 5er but I think it's a similar argument for a bumper-pull.

I'm a fan of the CAT Scale (or any scale). "It's the only way to be sure" (name that movie).

These replays are great. Really gives me a good idea of things. I'm looking at a 2017 Silverado 2500HD LT CC Duramax Custom Sport, but was throwing around the idea of a Ram 2500 CTD Laramie Sport too. Seems like the Silverado has more payload because of the leaf springs instead of the coil rear springs.

Wow, unicorns do exist. I always heard about this setup, but never saw one or knew someone that had one.

At the end of the day I think what's key is "available" payload capacity in concert with axle load considerations with both FW's & TT's. But, TT's tend to require more attention to TV axle/load weight distribution.

Yes, I agree 100% that a scale visit takes all the guess work away.
