Which hitch weight?

Getting our new Jayco Jay Flight 32bhds TT next week. Confusion about which WDH to get.
Trailer: Unloaded vehicle weight 7595
Dry Hitch weight 955
GVWR 9975
Cargo Carrying Capacity 2380

Should we get the 10,000 or 12,000 hitch? We have a couple of different opinions which makes this confusing.

Tow vehicle: 2005 Ford F350 Super Duty Diesel V8

Thank you for taking time to comment on this.

Welcome and congrats on an awesome rig!!!!

Regarding which wd bar rating to go with due to hitch/tongue weight (tw), obviously a lot does depend on exactly how you pack and what is packed in the front pass through weight wise. And if you will be traveling with near full fresh water tanks, or just enough for an emergency restroom break (~10-15g).

Another factor that may help decide which to get is from everything I have been told, read, etc... is that the weight of the propane tanks and a battery on the tongue are NOT included in the "brochure" dry tw. 2-30lb tanks and a battery add ~160lbs before loading anything else in the rig!!! So that puts you over ~1100lbs already.

Now, maybe to add to the confusion (hopefully this has helped clear things so far!!!), I suggest for the 32 BHDS at least the 1400 or 1500lb rated wd bars! As a comparison, our '16 had a "brochure" dry weight of 910 or 920lbs. With all the tanks empty (fresh, gray, & black) we have scaled at 1400lbs tw the one time I have weighed. So if I needed to have full fresh water tanks (80g) I probably actually need the 1700lb wd bars.

What wdh are you looking at? If possible, get one with integrated sway control. The Reese Dual Cam, Reese SC, and the Equal-I-Zer 4 way system are all very good models!!!

Good luck!!!

I have the Equal-i-zer 12,000 and it works great and my rig is smaller that yours so you def don't want the 10,000, You may need the 14,000. Equal-i-zer has a calculator on their site

Welcome to JOF

The 7,595lb published UVW of the 32BHDS isn't representative of the actual "as- shipped" UVW...., IMO 8,000lbs would be closer to the actual "as-shipped" UVW (includes LP weight).

A moderately loaded 32BHDS including battery/cargo (no fluids) would be around 8,800lbs, thus a recommended loaded tongue weight range of 1,144lbs - 1,320lbs (13% - 15% of gross).

If the 32BHDS was loaded to it's GVWR of 9,975lbs, the recommended loaded tongue weight range would be 1,297lbs - 1,496lbs.

Neither...., and I agree with the prior comments, go with at "least" a 1,400lb rated WDH with integrated sway control.

Which hitch weight?

We have the 1400 lb bars on our 2014 32 BHDS...
Last trip across the scale showed our TW at just under 1400 lb.
TW adds up fast on this model because the only outside storage is across the very front.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond to my question. After reading your responses I am so happy I asked.
We are leaning towards the Equal-I-Zer hitch. I will order according to your suggestions and get to a scale once we are loaded up.
Thanks again for your responses, it is appreciated.

Tuc,

Does your truck have a 2" or the 2-1/2" receiver? If the 2-1/2", I would highly suggest a 2-1/2" shank for the wdh to eliminate the extra slop created when using the adapter sleeve.

I was on the cusp between 400-600 and 600-800 for the Husky Centerline TS so I went with the higher number. During 1300 miles of very windy driving this past week it worked great. Don't know if you'll have the same situation with Equalizer, but I was happy with my choice.

I pulled my trailer through a thunderstorm last week with gusty winds and the Equalizer worked amazingly. I have the 10K. You should get the 14K.
