Hi Rick56,

How long ago have you done this? I would like to do this too but my husband says it won't last, the walls are too thin especially on an interior wall???

Your husband is right. That wall (between the back bed and the bathroom) is very thin, and does not have the thickness for even the shortest 1" hollow wall anchor let alone a screw. Maybe Rick56 used bolts/nuts ...? I mounted a full lenght mirror on that same wall and since the clips had some thickness I was barely able to use the 1" hollow wall anchors.

In anything mounted in the RV one has to be concerned with dynamic loads (additional loads due to trailer vertical motions such as bouncing up and down). Depending on how heavy the attached item is and how much of a standoff from the wall, it could rip off the wall in short order. If I were mounting the medicine cabinet to that wall I would have used the screws as well as fully gluing the back of the cabinet to the wall to help mitigate the prying load and translate the load seen by the wall as more "sliding" (or shear) load. My mirror is closer to the wall so the pry out load is lower than for a medicine chest.

Luckily my RV came with a medicine chest / mirror on door on the side wall over the sink and that wall is stronger.

Don't be afraid to screw a cabinet to the exterior wall. Jayco attached medicine cabinets that way.

Very true. I have mounted all sorts of things to my exterior walls, both inside the RV and outside. One inch hollow wall anchors are your friends.

This was the 1st Mod I did. The Mirror was attached with two strips of double sided tape. I used a very thin pry bar to get under the mirror and applying very slow steady preasure the mirror was easy to remove. I purchased a small medicine cabinet at Home Depot. I attached it with 4 very fat short screws, one in each corner on the inside of the cabinet.

The only issue is the magnet on the medicine cabinet is not strong enough to keep it closed when towing. We found a small plastic clamp that we put on to keep it closed when towing.

As for the placement, I set mine just a little to high fo rour 10 year old, he has to climb up on the edge of the shower and knell on the sink to get inside... but this has been a great modification.. toothbrushes, toothpaste, asprin, deoderant etc.. stay in all camping season. so now packing for a weekend is just food, clothes, and go camping!

I did this tonight to remove the mirror in my 184BH and it worked like a charm! Fishing line and some leather work gloves and about 60 seconds and it popped right off. This forum is awesome!

2011 x17z bathroom mirror to medicine cabinet?

Great info on a medicine cabinet modification! Can anyone answer, when screwing to the exterior walls from inside, are there "studs" I can try to hit, and how far apart are they, and how do you find them? Otherwise, just screwing into the foam fill, just use hollow wall anchors then? Thanks!

I was lucky in that the trim from the original mirror was stapled into studs along the top and one side. I knew they were solid because I could barely pull them out! Had a heck of a time and ended up just hammering the last couple flush. But it wasn't too hard to be able to find the solid parts just by pushing on the wall and seeing where it had give and where it didn't.
