2016 Jayco x23b

Hello jayco rv's: I am due to pick up our new 2016 Jayco x23b the last
week of September. have to go to e lancing mi to get it. I live in Colorado but will travel that distance to save over $ 5,000. We put every
option that we could get on it. Got it at Gilletts Interstate rv .com. We cant
wait to pick it up. More later

Wow, that's a **** of a drive. It's a bit pricey but you should consider taking one of the two ferries from WI to MI on your way out.

I know its a long drive but when you save over $5,000 compared to a camping world
dealer or any other dealer I will go for it. Its all interstate from Colorado and we plan
to tour the jayco plant in Indiana .

We will pull the x23b with a 2009 Toyota 4x4 pick-up v-6 4.0 L long bed with 236
horse power, Double Cab. What do you think ?

A V6, and you're going to pull an X23B from Michigan to Colorado?? I don't know, I would have my reservations. I pull mine with a 5.7l Ram 4x4 and it does it fine but even with my truck the full-time tow rating is 5500lbs (that's including cargo and human weight) and my max tow rating is 10500 pounds but that rating isn't for full-time towing. I'd look up your towing specs for your truck. I personally wouldn't want to tow it with a v6. But you know how opinions go.

I looked it up, your MAX towing is 6500 pounds if you have the TRD model, 3500 pounds for the 4.0l liter stock package. Those numbers aren't for full time towing across states, so, you're gonna put some wear and tear on your truck probably and it is more than likely going to be a rough ride, because your full time towing is probably half that. Hopefully you have transmission/oil coolers and a tow package.

Interesting phrase, I'm on two weeks vacation and I want to go visit my dad in WA. about 1800 miles, three days give or take. Am I full time towing?

Yes, that would be considered a full-time tow, most trucks have a max tow rating and a continous tow rating. The max towing would be for say, you're getting a load of decking from a lumber store and you're taking it across town and you don't do it everyday. A continuous tow rating is for something you do everyday or for long distances/multiple days. Like tow a trailer across country or tow a skidsteer every day for your job.

For example: That's the main difference between owning a Dodge Ram 2500 and a Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty, the Heavy Duty (in the case of Ram) means you can continually tow the max rating. A non heavy duty rating has a different rating between max and continuous. Both the Heavy Duty and the regular 2500 have the same max tow rating, but the Heavy Duty can tow the max ALL the time whereas it wouldn't be recommended in the non heavy duty.

Hopefully that's crystal now to everyone.

In your case Ed, you have a super duty truck which makes no distinction between a max or continuous rating. You can pull the max 24/7 without any issues.

I don't know. My 2011 Dodge Ram towing rating had two ratings on their website when I bought it in 2011. A max towing and a standard towing. The heavy duties just had a max towing. That's when I figured all this out. Now none of that is there.

Apparently there is a SAE J2807 towing standard now that did away with part-time/full-time ratings that Ram used to do. So now it is all just a max rating. So forget everything I said I guess. I still wouldn't tow a X23b from Michigan to Colorado in a V6 though (unless it was the Ford dual turbo v6).

Plus it's a gas engine, so the towing capacity should be reduced 2% (?) per 1000 ft of altitude...

I pull a 2015 X23B with my V6, 290hp, 2011 Explorer (5,000lb max tow) with tow package and with a weight distribution hitch. It pulls very well, but when you're in hills it does not maintain cruise speed. Meaning say I have it set at 65, it'll lose speed, downshift, get back to 65 and go through that cycle over and over. I'd imagine a V8 may not do that. On flat(ish) ground it does a great job. I wouldn't even consider taking it across country though or into any mountain areas. I live in Michigan and also bought from Gillette in East Lansing. Granted it'll be mainly flat from Lansing until Colorado. Either way that's a long pull.

It'll also likely be a head wind the entire way back too.

On hills you should drop it down a gear to resolve that issue!

Hi : My Tacoma owners manual says not to pull a trailer with the cruise control on.
Also I try to keep speed just under 60mph. Does the WDH help when towing? We try
to travel lite and not bring the kitchen sink. The Tacoma weighs 4400lbs empty. GVWR
is 5450lbs. We wont come close to that. GVWR on x23b is 4950lbs. I have a 6500 lb
tow package on my Tacoma. Owners manual says I can pull 11,100 lbs with our Tacoma 4x4. I have a scan gauge that scans all functions including Tran Temp.
Best device I have ever bought. I plan to talk to my Toyota service manager. Any
comments are welcome.

Not sure where you got that owner's manual, but that's definitely not accurate. The 2009 Tundra with the big V8 isn't even rated for that. If you have the 6,500# tow package, then that is your max trailer weight. The tongue weight of the trailer will likely be at least 600#, so factor that into your payload.

It sounds like you'll do fine Ron, best of luck. You've educated yourself and plan to find more info. The advice should always be to follow the manufacturer recommendation, but they also cover their butts. There is conflicting information on towing with cruise online and I think it comes down to personal preference, Blog Post | Okay to Use Cruise Control While Towing? | Car Talk

The WDH certainly helps with towing, 2 main things: transfers weight to the trailer (helps keep your front end on the ground) and reduces sway (however the dual axle will help prevent this as well). Here's some information that would get you familar, but there is lots out there, Common Weight Distribution and Sway Control Questions | etrailer.com

If you buy a WDH system, be sure that you get one that allows you to backup the trailer without having to disconnect the bars first. Some do not allow this and you will break the bars if you backup. I bought mine from Gillette for $500 and that included the install (they installed it while I was doing the walkthrough of the vehicle). Also, if you need to buy a brake controller still I would buy one on your own and do the install before you come to MI to get your trailer. I bought the Tekonsha P3 for $145 off etrailer, then spent another $15 on the controller cable and it took me 20 minutes to install. Gillette will charge you $240 for the P2 model that doesn't have a LED readout. Just call eTrailer and they will ensure you purchase the correct cable.

Hey before you leave/take delivery, make sure that they thoroughly test the battery. I picked up mine 6 weeks ago and there was an open ground from the battery. It would drain dead in 6 hours with NOTHING running. I'd hate to see you have an issue and have to fix on your own on your trip back if you are boondocking at all. Also in my post, the wirenut that they use to tie in the positive cables at the 12V battery is JUNK! I'd make them heat shrink butt connector that and shrink wrap it ontop of that before you leave the lot!! If Aaron is your dealer, say hi for me. Nice people at the dealership.
