Awning supports

Hello,

We recently purchased a 19H and haven't had it out in any type of weather. I have been reading about installing additional awning supports and want to know if anyone has any experience using these with the electric awning that comes on the 19H now days. Specifically, I have been looking at the Carefree add on rafter VII.

My main questions are, is an additional support needed with the electric awnings that you can tilt a side to account for rain? Does anyone have any experience putting aftermarket awning supports on their 19 H electric awning?

The Electric Dometic Awning has a tilt. Just pull one end down and tighten the knop on the sliding rail bracket. That's what's on my 2012 198RD.

He has a Carefree Awning like mine and it does not have this feature. What I do is attach a ratchet strap to the arm and to my wheel and just ratchet it down an inch or two to let the water run off to the rear of the TT. You can attach one end to the picnic also if it's in the right location.

My Carefree Elec Awning has the ability to tilt, my TT 2012, I know originally some didn't tilt but if your TT is '12 or newer I would be shocked if it didn't have this feature. the tilt requires a manual setting, but it's there.

As for a support, if the weather is bad enough to be concern I just roll it up. Maybe leave it extended a couple feet just to cover chairs and what not.

I guess it depends on what your concerns are. Low wind with a manual awning I have anchored mine down with straps and de-flappers. Light to medium rain just lower one or both corners. Strong wind or rain I would Stow the Awning. I haven't tried the Awning Ribs that are available from CW, they might help. Also, on my TT with the manual awning I unclipped the lower end of the awning arms from the trailer so I could set them vertically. Makes a stronger anchor and I don't walk into them. My new FW has a power awning so I don't know if I can do anything.

I don't have pictures with me at the moment, but will post an option I have that can't be bought. Self storing telescoping aluminum poles on the awning arms that can be pinned / anchored down. A retired engineer on the FR forum used to build them and sold a bunch. We were lucky enough to get one of the last sets. Most of it is fairly easy to duplicate if your somewhat handy. These were built specifically for the A&E power awnings, but something else could be made for the Carefree.

Not my rig, but the same poles. The bracket utilizes the factory A&E bolts. There is an inner and outer pole with a ton of holes for varying heights. The poles pin in a bracket at the bottom of the arm for storing. There is a tie down point on the upper bracket. You get the idea. What's cool is you can paint, polish or both. Some polish the inner pole like chrome and paint the outer pole black or white. Pretty cool looking either way. Since the poles have multiple holes for the D-Pin, you can tilt the awning and still secure it down no matter what the terrain is. Some have made similar out of painters poles.

when you open your electric awning it will either have a scerw knob on the arms (which you can slide an arm inside the other and tighten the knob to create a tilt) or your arms will have a series of holes with a push button-similar to a tent pole adjustment (you can push that button in and slide your arm down to another hole to create a tilt).

Regardless of which style you have, you must relocate to nominal position on both sides before retracting your awning

I have a Crapee of Colorado awning and a Crapee of Colorado screen room.. My advice is to not waste any money on what they sell.. the product is inferior. My next awning will be a Dometic manual one

I don't have either one that you describe on my Carefree and it's a 2010 EXP21M Hybrid.

Mine has the holes. Which you can offset for rain it also says in my manual that it has a automatic rain dump feature as long as you don't have it tilted too much.
I would refer to your manual.
I know for the year a model my camper is I wouldn't put added supports. Also the manufacture should have made a good product to begin with so why add extra stuff if not needed. Obviously in heavy rains and high winds roll it up.

Mine Has the holes so you can tilt the awning but you dont have the return it to the original position I set mine at a tilt and that is the way it stays have not had any problem with it yet.

My 2012 is the same way. When I did my walkthrough, the tech said the awning pitch wasn't adjustable. I asked him what the holes on the awning arms were for [already knowing] and he said "I'll be darned, first Carefree I've seen that's adjustable". So I think pre 2012 most weren't.

well mine is tiltable with the knobs to tighten but I have had great luck leaving them loose and letting it work its magic. medium winds it blows upward , rain it drops down in the middle and dumps the only time I reel it in is if the winds are real strong
