Battery discharges rapidly, converter charges slowly

So, I think I have a converter problem, but I wanted to pose the question to those with more experience than me.

When plugged in to 30 amp shore power, my 12vdc equipment will drain the battery at a fairly rapid clip. Example, if I leave the outside light on overnight, when I wake up in the morning all lights will be dim, the refrigerator low voltage warning will show on the control panel, and occasionally the CO detector will give the low voltage warning. "Batt" level on the status panel will show one or two lights (out of four). When I turn off all 12vdc equipment, the battery will recharge in an hour or so (I've never really timed it).

I've checked fuses/CB, looked for open/grounded wires. I have almost exhausted my limited knowledge of troubleshooting electricity/electronics.

I am interested in other people's experiences and/or advice.

When on shore power, the battery is supposed to be disconnected from the 12VDC equipment (just the battery charger).


Your converter is NOT getting 120VAC power (check the breakers) or the converter is not functioning at all.

See if the rest of the RV is getting 120VAC by plugging in a lamp or seeing if the microwave or A/C is operating.

The 120AC definitely works to the rest of the trailer. All appliances function as advertised. What adds to my confusion is that the battery WILL recharge, but only after I turn off all the 12vdc equipment.

From your description, the converter is definitely malfunctioning. The battery charger is working (bulk and trickle charge). But the converter is simply NOT!


You need someone who knows a-thing-or-three about the converter to get in there with a meter and find out if:
- There is no AC power getting to the converter
- The changeover relay is borked
- The smoke leaked out of the converter supply
