Broke My Camper!

I had a bad day today. I managed to forget about a low hanging branch and did not turn in time. As a result I tore a ling slice in the roof, completely riped the awning and all framing off the camper. Now we're in peak camping season with sites booked through august. Im guessing this is going to take a lot of time and money to correct. I think I'm going to be sick.

Can you post a picture? If it's mostly a tear maybe it can be patched for the season then fixed in the off season.

Most holes can be patched with eternabond tape.

Definitely have insurance. Thats the only positive. Im concerned about the time it takes to make the repairs and when the dealer can get to it. The bolts that anchor the awning frame to the fiberglass sidewere riped right out. Other than stripped bolt holes, i dont see any significant damage to the fiberglass sides. Theawning and roof will both need completely replaced however. Not to mention, my insurance provider will more than likely dump me after this one.

I think you're right about the time it would take to correct the problems. It could be months of waiting from story's I've read about.

If you are capable, Do you think this tape could solve the slice in the roof issue?
You could possible use something like it for the holes left in the sidewall too.

Jump on craigslist and purchase a budget camper to get you thru the season. Then sell it when no longer needed.

As long as it wouldnt be an issue with the Jayco warranty, think I could seal the roof to get me through the season. I just bought the camper new in april. As for the holes on the side, I went ahead and put the screws with putty back in to get me through the weekend. Thanks for the link. That might be just whst I need.

Take the awning off. Seal the holes. Get a patch and put it on the roof. Go Camping and take the trailer in when the dealer will have time to deal with it.

Call your insurance adjuster and have them come look at it, before you do anything.

Relax. It's an accident. That's why we have insurance. It can be fixed and it will be like new when it's done.

I know exactly how you feel.....my patch was 17' long and 18" wide. It looked like but it got us through the summer. A 100$ easy up will work for an awning and some shade.

Eterna bond tape to patch the roof.. Seal the holes from where the awning attaches and go camping till they have the parts to fix the awning..

Sometimes the Insurance will want to go the totaled way instead of fixing it. This sounds like an expensive repair... Hope it all works out ok...

X2 patch it up get a full fix later. However this is the time to put on a sprayed on roof. There are a few companies that do it. I think Rino Liner is one of them. What is nice about them is the Zero Required Maintenance. There is no caulking when they're done. Co worker did it and absolutely loves it.

I'm with Ray on this one. Wouldn't surprise me if the insurance company wanted to total it.

I patched the roof and sealed with lap sealant, plugged the holes, called the insurance adjuster and went camping. The roof is holding up just fine but not having an awning is worse than I thought. I may see about getting the awning fixed first and having the roof repaired over winter. The insurance adjuster sounded like he was on board with this as well. Do you all think there was any other damage internally to the finerglass side that may not be obvious to an untrained eye? If not, the awning may be something i can do. The awning lolks to be about 2,000 from Carefree of Colorado.

Happened to a friend of mine driving to his campsite and the corner of his trailer got caught on a gate ripped the whole back of his trailer off. The washroom was totally exposed all you could see was the toilet . He didn't let it ruin his camping , he just backed up closer to the bushes to give himself more privacy. We still laugh about it. Part of life and spit happens .

Since you have insurance and are going to get a new roof, I strongly suggest you look at RVRoof | Home of the original sprayed RV Roof. It won't be much if any more than a new rubber roof and a whole lot better product. No caulking EVER and a lifetime no leak guarantee. I did mine six months ago after my 5 1/2 year old rubber roof membrane was failing and will never ever go back to a "leak waiting to happen" rubber roof.

We all make mistakes. Don't sweat it. I tried driving my minivan into my garage with 2 mountain bikes on it. Damage our siding, the bikes, the bike rack, and the van when one of the bikes came tumbling down.

Did a similar thing at a rental company when returning a moving truck . Took out the top of the truck as well as causing a lot of damage to the covering where the gas pumps were . Wasn't my fault though as I was advised to drive the truck over to the gas pump for a fill. Manager was peeved at the employee as the roof was just repaired a week prior for the same reason.

The roof patch is holding up fine. The insurance adjuster estimated the damages close to $9,000. Newroof, new awning, paint, and miscelanious pieces. I'm scheduled to take it to the dealer in september.
