Question Comparing the GVWR on the 2014 X23B and 2014 X23F

So we are considering upgrading from our Jayco 1206 popup as it is a lot of work to set up with 2 little kids running around and my DW would like a toilet and other creature comforts. We looked at both the X23B and X23F and I like both floor plans. I'm leaning a little more toward the X23F for the third bed for when the kids grow up and don’t want to share anymore. I’m also looking at upgrading to a bigger tow vehicle.

In doing my research I ran into something curious in regards to the weights of these two trailers. These trailers are very similar and have the same length. I would presume they are built on the same frame. The dry weights are very close (only 180 lbs difference) which makes sense to me but the GVWR are very different. The X23B is 1045 lbs less than the X23F. You can also see they made up the difference by giving the X23F a much higher cargo carrying capacity.

This made me wonder why the X23F frame can carry so much more weight than the X23B. This would also make the X23F too heavy for my current truck if we change trailers first. This led me to some more research. I went on the Jayco archive page http://www.jayco.com/pages/products/archive.php and checked out the 2013 and 2012 X23F. The both years the GVWR was 4995. The X23B did not change significantly.

What are your thoughts about this? Is this a typo or did they change something on the frame? I'm really curious about this.

I have included the information from the current website for comparison.

There are similar differences in nearly identical floor plans between the JayFlight and JayFlight Swift lines. My guess is they have identical frames and it has more to do with springs, axles, brakes, wheels and tires.

I have wondered about this too, but I have had no reason to really check in to it. My first thought might be the axles under the units are different. One thing I noticed on the 2014 models is the FW tank size appears to be much greater than ours. I think our tank is only a 28 gallon tank.

One of the big selling points for the 23B was the ability in a pinch to “Turtle”, which is to sleep in the unit without opening the bunks. We have done it a few times. Planed sleeping in a Walmart parking lot, during a power drive to get some miles under our belt. Another time we were out camping with my brother’s family and they were following us and had a flat tire on the PU, about 10 miles from home. After a number of hours fixing getting new tires, our family continued on and pulled into the CG after 1 am. They showed up the next day as they thought it would be too much work to setup that late at night with the kids, and being so close to home.

There may be a difference in tires too. We have Towmax ST185/80R13. Each tire is rated at 1480 lbs max load at 50 psi. If that is being used on the 23F the tires or over capacity if the unit is fully loaded by 75 lbs (total).

The 23J has a higher capacity as well, I think it is the axels that make the difference

I am only wondering in case I get the trailer before I get a new TV. I want to make sure my current TV can pull it in the short term before we upgrade.

That makes sense to me as the dry weight of this unit is 600 pounds more than the X23B so it would need beefier axels.

If your current TV can pull the 23B, AND you are planning to purchase a new TV, AND you ensure you do not load the 23F beyond your current TV capability, you should be fine. If not you could blow an engine, a transmission or something else, and put others at risk of injury.

Just remember when you are looking at the towing capacity of your current or future TV, they calculate that with a full tank of fuel and an average size driver ONLY for cargo. So once you add your DW and kids, plus your stuff to the TV, you will drop your towing capacity by that much.
