Thumbs down First day on the planet!

Hi all! I am new to all of this and am picking up my new X17Z on the 6th (can't wait!) I have gotten a lot of good information on this board, and never realized how much I did not know (hence the first day on the planet statement)

One question that I think I need answered before I pick up my trailer is, do I need a WDH or sway control or both? I will be pulling with a 2016 Jeep Cherokee with factory tow package. What should I expect these to cost me?

Any input would be appreciated!

Stephen

Years ago, I towed a hybrid (only slightly bigger) with a Cherokee. I found the WDH with duel cam sway bars to be a necessity. The sliding friction anti-sway, I found to b close to useless.

No idea what current costs are, but I'd start by looking at eTrailer.com.

We towed an x17z with a Jeep Grand Cherokee with factory tow package. Didn't need weight distributing hitch but did install an anti-sway. Bought the kit on Amazon for about $100 (I think I remember the price) and hooked it up myself. Towed that way all over the place and never had a moments problem. The 17z was a great camper until we realized our old bones didn't do so well climbing in and out of the bunk end. Good luck and have fun.

You might consider an Andersen Hitch. It would be a good choice for your combo!

Stephan,

Welcome and congrats on the new rig!!!

Concerning the need for a wdh or not, will depend more so on what your actual loaded tw (tongue weight) is and what your factory receiver hitch on the Jeep is rated for. Up until just recently with the trucks (not sure about your Jeep) there was a tw rating for weight carrying and for when using a wdh. Some of the new(er) trucks have only one rating now. Just check your Jeep. You may need to crawl under to see the sticker with the receiver hitch rating(s) on it.

If you do need to use a wdh, I would suggest one with integrated sway control vs the side mounted sway bar set up. Main reason is the side mounted model usually should be removed when making very tight turns, like when backing into a campsite.

Even if your loaded tt tw is within spec, a wdh will restore the lost weight from the front axle. Without a wdh the steering may feel a little light and possibly "like the front end is floating".

Enjoy the new rig!!!

Hope this will help

We actually owned both a Liberty and a Grand Cherokee at the same time, and always felt that the Liberty towed better. Challenge with a WDH hitch on a Liberty is that you need a hitch extension to clear the spare tire. The extension ads "flex" to the WDH set-up.

Traded the Cherokee for a RAM, but kept the 2002 Liberty until last Fall. Had over 185,000 miles on it when I sold it, and it's still on the road!

My hitch was either an 1" too high or about 2" too short to clear the tire.... The extension worked fine, once I found a "shimming" product at eTrailer.
