Gel coat? Did you do it when you purchased?

Talking to our dealership about purchasing a new TT. Now they are talking about upgrading and adding a gel topcoat at a tune of hmmm $800.00 plus. Is this necessary right now or can this wait? They said it will reduce marks (black streaks) on the trailer and will be easier to wash. I'm sure that might have some truth to it, but I'm not going to even think to do it if it's just your typically dealer upsell. I'm still kicking my ass that they talked me into a $1600 warranty package.

Dealers, sneaky little bunch! lol

That's what we always do but they are saying they have this new gel I guess kind of like a shellac. I think I'm going to skip the nonsense AND not going to buy that super extended warranty again.

Forget the $800 clear coat... The black streaks are a part of TT life, and wash off easily if you wax your trailer.

Just my thoughts,
Don

I bought my 2014 X19H at a dealer in Smithville, Ontario. They suggested the coating (PPS Technology) at 672 CDN. It would protect the trailer keeping it looking Showroom New and reduce maintenance and clean up time. Due to not having room for my trailer in my driveway for washing / waxing and the fact that the unit would take up alot of time washing /waxing I decide to go for it. It was the best decision I made.

I do not need to ever wax the unit and washing it takes less the 15 mins. At the campground I can just use a damp cloth (no washing solution) and just give it a quick once over to clean any travel dust off.

My last trip out we arrived back late in the evening and I noticed the whole front of the trailer was covered in squashed BUGS. Unfortunally I could not get back to the trailer for a few days. So the bugs were on it baking in 38C (100F) heat for 3 days. Day 4 it poured rain. Finally got out to the trailer on day 5 and there wasn't a single bug on the front. I spent 20 mins with a wet cloth (no washing solution) wiping the entire trailer and it sparkles like new.

$672 was worth it to me. I can spend more time enjoying camping.

Try to negotiate that into them throwing that in. A friend of mine did that when he bought his a couple of years ago. His is still shining and he only washes it twice a year.

We have it.
Worth every penny.
Shines great.
Bugs slide off.
Like the person up top said just a damp cloth and all your troubles go away.

I always decline all the dealer add on stuff. But now I'm wondering. I haven't washed and waxed my trailer yet. Depending on how that goes, I may have to make an appointment.

Not sure, if I can do it myself, that would be the best bet. My dealership doesn't like to throw in much.

Thoughts on this product guys??

Gelcoat is an actual fiberglass finish resin. Think boats and fiberglass aircraft. I'd be shocked if you could do an RV for $800. I think it would be like "full body paint" as an option.

Ask to see an RV that they've done... That's where I'd start. I'm very particular about "paint" work and at $800, I question if they're actually telling you that it is "Gelcoat" or some sort of surface protection that is waxed based.

What cb said. If is was a true gel goat like that is on boats then 800 bucks is an absolute STEAL. We just spent 20k to gel coat a 38ft boat

All I have ever used was rainx car wash soap. Comes out bright and shiny with a little scrubbing. Dealer tried the upsell on me too.

I think it must be fairly new. They didn't mention it when I purchased my x17z last year

Out of curiosity because we pick up a new Eagle in a week or two, does this gel coat have a warranty against oxidation. That is one of my biggest concerns about these new brown caps and I understand many of the dealers offer this gel coat. I don't ever buy into dealer programs, but I have a strong feeling the cap will oxidize and I would like someone else to pay for it when it does.
