How Big a Generator to Run Air Conditioner,Etc. in Jayco17C, 2011?
I cannot figure out how many watts my Jayco17C 2011 air conditioner takes nor the refrigerator. I have no idea how to convert BTUs to watts. Can someone help me with this? We just bought a new truck and can now carry generator. We could not take any extra weight when we were pulling with an SUV. We want to run the refrigerator and air conditioner when we are camping where there is no electricity. Generators go by watts, don't they?

Watts=Volts x Amps. 120V x 30A = 3600 watts. There should be some data plate on your A/C unit that shows the full load amps and you should be able to get the full load current for your fridge from the specs in the owners manual. Do the same calculation with the full load amps to get the running watts. Usually you figure 2X the running amps to start motor driven equipment.

You can run the fridge on gas, no need for electric. When I camp in the summer I always run the fridge on gas, even if I have electric. It cools down quicker and works better on gas vs. electric.

I use a Yamaha EF2400iSHC and it runs my 13.5K A/C just fine.

Ditto on the Yamaha 2400ishc. It starts/runs my 13.5K btu A/C. The Yamaha delivers enough surge power for a long enough duration to get the unit start. I decide to add a start capacitor to improve the situation and relieve some of the stress on the generator during A/Cstart-up.

Thanks for the follow-up.
I haven't had any issues with my 13.5 A/C starting, but anything to make life easier on the genny works for me

Remember to take elevation into account when sizing your generator. You lose about 3% capacity for every 1000'.
The good news is that the higher you go, the cooler it gets so the chances of needing the A/C gets smaller.
