If you have one of the Atwood gas/elect hot water heaters and the water is too hot...

I emailed Atwood about my water heater temp being so hot it will burn you, and after a 2nd email 2 weeks later I finally got a reply.
They told me there is an Atwood adjustable thermostat you can buy and install.

Atwood Part number 93105

I am going to search the web and find one because that water temp is way too hot for me.

Maybe you feel the same way, and this will help.

I too think the water is too hot.

I found it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/ATWOOD-PRODUCT...t+number+93105

The research I have done so far does not speak well of the reliability of this thermostat. Generally what I have found is it won't hold a consistent temperature and the failure rate seems to be quite high.

It also appears this thermostat will only control the temperature when operating on gas. You would still have too hot water when on electric. That makes it worthless in my book. However, I have not been able to confirm this.

Would be interested to hear from others on what they find. Particularly an installation instruction sheet.

I find that if I turn the cold water on with the hot water while showering that it cools the hot water some.

UPDATE: I have confirmed this thermostat is effective ONLY when operating on gas. It has NO effect on electric operation.

Why not just open the hot water tank bypass a wee bit to mix cold water with hot, effectively lowering the temp?

UPDATE #2: It appears that Atwood does not create all models thermostatically control in the same way. Some have SEPARATE thermostats for electric and gas operation. Others will let the electronic control module control both electric and gas from the same thermostat.

My particular unit has a yellow wire running from the control module to a relay at the rear of the water heater for the electric element. The key seems to be if you have that yellow wire then ONE thermostat controls both. If you do not have the yellow wire then the thermostat described in this thread will only control the gas operation.

I too think the water is way to hot. I am surprised that they set it to be that way. If I had young children camping with me I would install the thermostat, but since it is usually adults I just warn them that the water is very hot. My water heater, like many others, only runs on propane so the thermostat only working on propane would not be a problem for me.

Has anyone considered installing an Anti-Scald Mixing Valve? Just dial it to the temp you want and forget it. My only concern would be winterizing the valve.

Here are a few valves I found doing a quick web search. http://www.pexsupply.com/Honeywell-A...-Valve-1474000

I ordered a couple of thermostats which might be here today or tomorrow. I'll take a look at how the connect up and get back to you folks. I really can't believe they don't have an adjustable thermostat on that heater. It seems to me that opens them up for a lawsuit if someone gets burned. This seems like a lot of work to fix something they should have addressed already.

Yeah, that's why you can't get a really hot cup of coffee at McDonalds any longer.

I talked to Atwood and they told me that the adjustable thermostat will work for both electric and gas on models with a 10E or 4E in the model number.
I have a 10E. I installed the adjustable thermostat just now. Took all of maybe 20 min. It is very easy. You cut part of the black foam off, take out the original Tstat, bend back the pins that held the old one in, install the new one with the new metal bracket to hold it in place, plug in the two wires and you are done!
The new one has a little dial on it to adjust the temp. Now when I go out Labor day weekend I'll check it out.

Hi there. I am having the same scalding hot issue with my Atwood water heater. Did the thermostat you installed work as expected?

I like the super hot water, you use less since you have to throttle it and mix with cold water, so the little 6 gallon heater lasts longer in the shower that way.

But we did notice that running the hot water in the sink un-mixed got the drain so hot that the plumbers putty around the drain started oozing out! Our kids are pretty smart and have each only been badly scalded once lol (just kidding).

Oh yea it's hot! I seem to burn my hand at least once a weekend last season! I'm a slow learner. Lol! But I must say the 10 gal Atwood has easily handled 4 showers in a row. I attribute part of that being that less hot water is being used in the mix due to the scalding temp.

RV water heaters usually have 6-8 gallon tanks which empty pretty fast is only using the hot water. They are designed to be used by blending hot and cold to reach the desired temp so that the small hot reserve will last a lot longer. Same principle at home when you are the 3d or 4th person in line for a shower in the am.

You have to be careful to blend it to the desired temp, but how difficult is that to do??

One simple thing you can do to prevent scalding is to leave the winterize bypass valve partly open. Same effect as a mixing valve, but low tech and already installed on most campers. Probably won't work on the newest campers with 3-way winterizing valves though.
