Is this normal?

This is the black water tank on my x17z. It has a upwards indent that makes me feel it wouldn't drain properly or entirely. See picture. Is this normal? I'm very particular and use backflush (using factory equipped tank flush) till water runs clear but then when looking down toilet I still see a little water and particles. I won't add that picture

Just running the flush alone will not clean the tank. Gotta figure that flush nozzle doesn't get all parts of the tank. I have installed multiple sprayers in one tank before, but even that doesn't do it all. Although manf. and others will advise against it, about the only way to really clean it is the fill and flush method, which we've done on all of our rigs. Key is not overflowing. What I always do (when we first get a new rig) is run the flush and watch down the toilet with a flashlight, timing how long it takes to fill the tank. Cut that in half and I have a baseline for what I want to do. Then just a matter of filling, timing, dumping repeat. Biggest thing is, don't get distracted no matter what or it can get ugly quick. Youtube has plenty of videos on what really works, fill and flush being the best really.


As for the indention, I don't think it'll cause a problem really. Not uncommon for tanks to have little variations in them.

I started doing the fill and flush after the 3rd trip because I wasn't happy with the flush results after looking down toilet. I typical do the fill and flush method 2 times. How many times do you recommend?

I fill and flush mine 2-3 times after each trip and usually 5 times when putting away for winter.

Apparently I need to step up my game. Good to know. Do you typically leave antifreeze in both grey and black water tank during winter?

We don't shut down for the winter, but really, you don't need to leave anything in the tanks. Some leave a little in the toilet bowl itself to keep the seal lubricated though.

Yea... I don't get so bent out of shape about it. It is meant to hold poop, not potable water. I drain and flush once if I have full hookups at my site. I don't fully fill the black tank to flush, I let it fill for a couple of minutes and then flush it. I don't understand the desire to polish the inside of the black tank. Been camping for 5 years and no odors from my black tank. Must be doing something right...

If anybody does ever have issues with poop build up, sensors etc, get a little RV Digestit and follow the instructions. It'll eat everything out of there. 1 bottle, fill tank, let sit for a couple of days, dump and rinse. Also can follow the geo method opposed to traditional chemicals. We don't use the geo method anymore as we've come up with our own recipes, but we do use water softener in the tank. Makes stuff extremely slick and it all comes out real easy.

Whatever antifreeze makes it to the tanks when I winterize is the only antifreeze my holding tanks see, so about a long toilet flush goes into the black and a bunch from the two sinks and shower/bath goes into the grey tank.

Being my first TT and winter owning it, I had the dealer winterize while they were doing warranty work but noticed they didn't put any anifreeze in the black or grey. Learning a lot through this forum. Appreciate all the input.

I would not worry about that indent at all. You will flush it out and add some water anyhow and it should never be completely dry!

IS that indent not meant to cause inside deposits to move to one side or the other as compared to building a stack directly under the Input Hole? LOL

That's the way I figure its designed on the inside of the tank.

What year is your x17z? Curious, because our 2014 doesn't have a factory equiped tank flush. Thanks.
