Jack Knife Sofa

I have a Jayco X23B (2015). My wife and I want to switch out the jack knife sofa bed to a two recliner system or a recliner love seat. We have the room, but I notice there is a box under the sofa which cannot be moved, I think. Anyone done this type of conversion?

What is in this mystery box? Everything can be moved... usually.

Are you certain it can't be removed? We have a jay flight slx 287bhsw & are planning to remove the jackknife sofa too. We plan on replacing it with 2 reclining chairs. We also plan to take out our dinette & replace with a queen sofa bed

Under one half of our jack knife sofa is the furnace and the intake hose for the fresh water tank. Neither can be relocated without more work than it's worth, so the sofa stays where it is.

I think you may be out of luck on that one, but still worth some investigation. The sofa is in the slide out which is raised over the main floor level to clear the wheel tubs (at least that is what the pictures appear to look like to me). I would expect that the raised level of the platform would have to remain to clear your wheels, and the mechanicals for the slide are probably down there too, putting a stock chair too high.

You might get a better idea by looking at it from the outside with the slide-out extended.

ETA: If possible, you might consider cutting down the legs on some existing furniture to get the right height though!

That's what I was afraid of. Can't simply relocate critical components without incurring a tremendous amount of expense. Thanks everyone.

If your box is like mine then its electrical . I haven't had a chance to look into it more but I would say you should be able to remove that box and tidy up those connections, keep it safe, not make it ugly looking and still make your changes. That box just unscrews from the wall ( just 1 screw) then have a look see.

Our 23b has water lines from the water pump to the water heater, electric wires and a heat duct running in the area under the sofa slide. I assume yours does too.

I seem to recall our 23B had the drive mechanics for the slide under the sofa. Current owners, am I remembering correctly?

Not quite sure if you mean the cushions only? I've never taken mine out, but if you jackknife it about half-way (makes a V-trough) you should be able to access all of the frame mounting hardware by reaching underneath (and possibly the cushion attachments if that is all you want?) Not necessarily easy access; have a flashlight handy so you can see what you are doing under there. Ours has a metal frame around that is only attached to the TT framing in a couple of spots; by unscrewing those you should be able to lift the entire unit out.

Wheel Lube

Can't find where to post new. Question, I have less than 1,000 on my 2015 X23B. Because of work and health issues, now retired, the TT has only been used 5 times. Bought new. I have performed standard visual inspection and repair as needed but am now thinking of wheel bearings. I do not want to take it to Camping World, Jayco dealer in Dallas area, as I do not trust them and don't care for the CEO's attitude and comments. Other than other TT dealers, what other types of shops work on TT, wheel bearings?

It's out of warranty now, and a bearing is a bearing (mostly Dexter and a couple of others), so any shop can do it. Doesn't need to be Jayco.

I have a local independent RV shop I use, you may have similar in your area. Also if you have an auto mechanic you trust, ask him. The procedure is pretty much the same as any older car (pre CV joint era) and he will have all the equipment and materials requred.

BTW - you should see a black "New Thread" button top left above "Threads in Forum" counter. That's where you start a new thread...

Hello RDCOX I see you have a 23B as well. I also want to remove the sofa but it seems to me it is involved with the slide out. Is your slide out still functional?

No issues with the slide out. The reason I am unable to replace the jack knife sofa with chairs is because the heating unit is under the couch. Just stuck with the uncomfortable jack knife couch.

For this reason, we are looking at upgrading to a Thomas Payne Heritage jack knife sofa; they have better cushions and substructure. They are still TV furniture, not the greatest, but they are better than the OE crud Jayco uses.
