mirror question

I will be towing my new x17z with my 2013 Tacoma and was wondering if I will be fine with the stock mirrors or would I be better off with CIPA 11960 mirrors?

That's totally up to you, but I'll bet you won't be able to see much with the stock mirrors. Hook up, and go for a short drive on a known course. You will have your answer before you get back home.

Can you see the sides of the RV in the mirrors you have now? If not you need other mirrors..

You are almost always better off with mirrors that extend out farther.

I agree with NewBlackDak, once you hook up, you will be able to see (or not) very quickly.

I have found that the right side (passenger side) is the most difficult for me to see adaquately, but that is my experience over many trailers but the same tow rig.

Maybe you could purchase the mirrors, see if they do what you want and return it/them if not.

I actually use that mirror you mention as a spare. It works fine, but it's a bit heavy and can be a little tedious to install. The rubber caps that contact the truck mirror housing can come off and make things a little dicey-But they do work

I prefer the slip on mirrors that CIPA makes, like the 11300 for the Tundra. I have a pair for my '99 E350. that work very well. They fit well, don't vibrate and there is not much to lose. Call CIPA to see if they have slip-ons to fit your mirrors, they have always been very nice on the phone.

I think some states have regulations about how far behind the trailer you need to be able to see. This website might be a place to research.

I towed a 7 ft wide trailer with a Trailblazer, probably comparable in width to your Tacoma. I could not see enough without extension mirrors. The X17z is 8 ft wide, I'd just get the extension mirrors. They are cheap, you won't be sorry.

In WI, they are required.

mirrors

Thanks for the response. I do like the slip on style. I emailed the company to see if they will fit on my Tacoma stock mirrors.

I have a 2013 Tacoma and X17Z. At his time I don't have towing mirrors and have made at least 10 trips without them. Although I don't find it ultimately necessary to have them it would make backing the trailer in some instances much easier. You have a couple options for the Tacoma, you can get a set of clip on mirrors being the cheap route to go or purchase a set of bolt on replacements that are quite expensive. Here are some links for the mirrors, and I did a lot of research previously on this subject and these are basically the only decent options out there.

If they have slip on style for your Tacoma, check Amazon. I just bought them for my Sierra, they were $45 for the pair.

If you have a TRD Sport Tacoma these will almost certainly scratch the paint on the mirrors when being taken on and off.

Wow, those Dodge style flip mirrors are pretty sweet. Way better than clip on's.

Thanks again for the response. I really don't want to scratch up my mirrors so I will try a few trips and see if they are really needed.

I went to Wally World last year and pick up these mirrors from camco:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Camco-Tow-...ingMethod=p13n

It's the Tow-N-See. I was impressed with how they worked. Hardly any vibration, plus they have the advantage of moving in/out up/down with your power mirrors. Can't beat the price either, a little over $18 bucks.

I have these exact same mirrors as they don't make slip on my my Trailblazer. At first I really liked them but found that as I drove the air pushing against the mirror made the mirrors bend in. I don't mean they collapsed like you do if something hits them, but that the adjustment on the electric mirror was being pushed inward and I am worried it will damage the electric mirrors over time. Happens on both sides of the truck.

Have you had this happen to you?

I fixed that issue on my Sierra (I have chrome mirrors)... used some no scratch silicone pads on the inside of the slip on.... never scratched...

And yes the extended mirrors do provide a better view of the back. With my previous TT and the Sierra I could see the driver's side rear marker on my TT.... Knew everything that what happening behind me!

When I had my Trailblazer I never had a problem with the clips interfering with the electric mirrors. But the air would push the extended mirrors in a bit so that we had to adjust them while driving.

The suction cup is attached to the mirror itself so I find I have to keep readjusting them out as I drive and eventually I can't readjust them out anymore. I'm worried it's damaging the mirrors.

My apologies Scott. I didn't use the suction cup type. Mine clipped on.

Hey Scott..... I can't really say if they do bend in or not. I haven't used them enough, especially on any long trips. But on the short trips we have gone on, I have not had any problems with them.

Just an update. I got my Cipa custom fit extensions. If it helps you, they have stick on foam strips included to protect the truck mirror.
