Yep. Fords do have a deep bed, thus they have a tall tailgate. Same thing with mine, I can't drop the gate when connected. I can open it about half way, same as OP.
You get used to packing first, hitching up, the adding everything you forgot over the side of the bed.
Interesting idea on the bigger shank. Might have to look into that.

That is why I lock the tailgate before hooking up. I can envision some well-meaning individual dropping my gate on the jack and putting a nice dent in the high strength steel.
Short of getting a hitch extension that is about 12" longer I think that you are going to have to implement a paradigm shift in how you travel.

I have a Chevy and can't open the tailgate all the way when hooked up to the X23B or our previous TT. An extension greatly reduces your hitch weight, the ones I have looked at cost about the same as a new shank! We travel with our dogs (Great Dane & Golden Retriever) in a kennel in the back of the truck and it sure is a hassle on long trips to un-hitch and re-hitch to get them out. Wish it wasn't dark outside or I'd be in the driveway measuring! I've had my Equal-i-zer hitch for more than 6 years and never realized they made a shank 18" long. Great post!

Hey thanks all!! I'm a little bummed out that I spend almost 300 dollars on my bed extender that I can't use while I tow. I guess for now I'll just remove the tongue jack and put back on with cordless drill when I get to campsites.

We have success!! Yes!! I went to the local trailer store and bought this bad boy. The handle does not get in the way anymore. It just barely clears the tailgate. Its even easier to lift and lower. Hope this helps some of you Ford owners!!

The distance between your trailer and truck changes all the time when the truck/trailer are not on the same plane. If you start up a hill the distance will reduce until you get the trailer on the hill with you.

Beat me to it. Cornering will change that distance as well. I think your either going to bend the jack or most likely crimp your tailgate unless you get a swing away jack like some utility trailers are equipped with. They mount on the side of the tongue, you pull a spring loaded pin and they swing up alongside the frame member.
By the way, do you have the 5.5' or 6.5' bed on the F150?

I pulled the trigger & ordered an 18" shank for my Equal-i-zer, should be here Monday. By my measurements, the extra 6" should allow me to open the tailgate, I'll report my findings.

My 2010 F150 just barely clears my jack by maybe one inch... I was thinking of making the ball mount a bit longer to clear better.
When i towing my fifth wheel i also almost ran into the problem with the high bed sides on the newer trucks. Everyone says you need to clear the sides by six inches. I know I was short on that number too haha...
At least now I only tow a trailer behind my truck. problem solved...
NO WAY could I use one of those v shaped hole see through tailgates. I store my 2KW Honda Generator in the back of my truck and it needs to be out-of-sight when not in use. My rear camera is also mounted in my original tailgate. Would not like giving that up either.
