Portable generator mounting

Hello everyone. New to the forum and am probably repeating this question. Just bought a Jay Feather X19H. Was wondering if anyone has found a suitable mounting location for a portable generator on the hybrid? I own a Honda EU3000is. Its about 130 lbs.
Great Hybrid, great generator. Any ideas?

Don't know about a hybrid. We mount ours on the sliding rear rack of our 5th wheel. I used strapping to attach it to the frame just for insurance. Its made two trips out west and several trips to Florida. I leave it on the trailer all the time. Never know when you may need it. Works great!!!

130lbs is a whole lotta mass. The bed of the tow vehicle is your best choice.


Unless you can mount is within a foot or so of the TT's axle, it'll do some really awful things to your tongue weight.

Since there is no bed on your FJ - and this is a fairly heavy trailer for an FJ, I would probably have someone custom build a frame mounted platform on the back. There's no way the bumper will handle this, but something solidly welded to the frame rails should work well, and will help reduce some of the tongue weight on the TV. My X19H runs about 15% tongue weight loaded or unloaded, so placing 130 lbs behind the axle might actually help a bit.

A second thought would be to place it over the tongue. We have an Arvika 2" mount that we use for our bike rack (see below), but you could get a cargo carrier. The Arvika is rated to handle 250#. BUT this will place about 3/4 of that weight on the tongue, and you will have to remove the generator and carrier before dropping the bunk.

If you do not want it in the FJ Cruiser, then a custom bumper mount would be the next best solution. Another option, you could add a 2" receiver hitch to the back of the HTT, welded to the frame, then add a cargo rack, and place the generator on it when you want to go somewhere. A good welding shop can fabricate up something fairly quickly. I am not sure what the new frames look like, but the older frames needed to be reinforced before a hitch could be added.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking of having a rear frame mounted hitch with basket installed. I guess until the warranty is up I will just put the Honda in the back of the FJ.

Why not a front receiver on the FJ? Then mount a cargo carrier, and strap the genny to the front of the truck?

good info.....I was thinking of the same thing as the OP. I have an X23B and was wondering if/how much I could put on it's rear bumper too? (It is a big square bumper compared to my last HTT)

My reading shows the max it will hold is a spare tire and the sewage drain hose. No more.

130# on the rear of an HTT may do some crazy things to tongue weight, handling, etc. Front mounted receiver sounds like the best option to me....

I think you might have something there. Looking into a front hitch with a Lowpro Lockdown to hold the generator. The FJ will definetely hold the weight.
