Stabilizing Jacks During Storage

The owners manual for my Jayco X20E indicates that you should not use the stabilizing jacks during storage. I had cranked mine down after my last camping trip and had planned to leave them down during the winter but I guess I'll crank them back up. I assumed, apparently incorrectly, that the jacks would take some of the weight off the tires. Does anyone know the reason for not using the jacks during storage?

I have read that if you have a tire go flatt that the extra weight on the jack may cause it collapse. Remember the jacks are just meant to stabilize not lift the trailer.

Another reason may the expansion and contraction of the ground etc., could cause problems. I pull ours up about an inch, that way if I need to put them back down, its a very quick process.

I posted on another thread about having a tire go flat while I was set up camping, I had a heck of a time getting the strain off. Had to use a bottle jack to take the weight off before they would retract.

Thankfully, no damage.

I agree, not a good idea in storage.

Plus all the extra contact with the ground are additional points of entry for ants, rats etc.

And if you left them down during storage and forgot about them, hooked up and tried to drive off, that would be interesting!

During my dealer demo, the person giving me the walk through did just that. He had the stabilizers down. My wife, myself, and the dealer rep were talking and doing the demo "thing". When it was all over, he began to pull the camper (with this nifty electric trolly that attached to the trailers tongue) and tried to pull it forward. After a loud scrapping sound, he quickly realized he had left the stabilizers down.

He bent one of them, and they had to replace the right side leg; they had the part in stock! Makes me think this was not the first time this happened.
