Tandem Axle vs. Single Axle

Hi Everyone, I've been researching this topic for a while now. I can see that there are pro's and cons to both single axle and tandem axle hybrids. I'd sure love to hear from those who have towed both and what there experience has been. Basically, I will purchase the 17z or the 19h. Probably can't go wrong with either of these great hybrids. We're talking about the difference of $1200 that separates these two units. Which is the easier tow with less sway?

Tandem Axle vs. Single Axle

Tandem will tow the best.
I have no experience with that trailer but own plenty of single axle and tandem trailers and the tandem tow the best.
Hope this helps in your decision.

Tandem Axle vs. Single Axle

We just sold out 17z and one of the reasons was the single axle. I just felt like if a tire blew on the 17z while driving then I'd be screwed. I don't know if its true, I just felt like that.

What is a benefit of a single axle besides only buying one set if tires compared to two.

This is my biggest fear. Thanks for the comment.

Four tires with a blowout > two tires.

As for campers I have only owned tandem axle trailers. However I do own a canoe trailer, a utility trailer and have used many other single axle trailers, and have seen many other trailers going down the road. What I have observed is single axle trailers bounce a lot as you go down the road. This bouncing places a lot of stress on the tires. I hear of more pop-up campers having flat tires than any other trailer. In addition tandem axle trailers usually have a greater carrying capacity (more cargo).

The one downfall that I commonly hear about the 17Z is it is a single axle trailer and that it has very limited cargo carrying capacity. I do not know much about the 19H.

Best of luck!

I have towed both single and tandem, and I like towing the tandem trailers better. I like backing up single axle trailers more than tandems. Those will turn on a dime. The only thing about tandem axles is when making a tight turn on pavement I think the sidewalls of the tires really get a work out because two of the tires will kind of be dragging instead of turning.

In my feeble mind , tandem is the only way to go & the dry hitch weight is 40 lbs lighter to boot. Again not knocking the 17 but the 19 ( at only $1200 more)is so much more tt. Just my $.02 Larry

To me the real question would be "which trailer do you want"? Whether it has a single or tandem axle will be dictated by the weight of the trailer and its cargo capacity as set by the manufacturer. It's not something that is an "option". AFAIK. I wouldn't let whether its single or tandem be the deciding factor but rather whether I liked the TT and fit my needs. JMO.

You have the truck for it, so go with the 19H. That was my advice on your original post. The tandem axle gives you the extra load capacity. My wife and I bought the X17Z due to the towing capacity of our TV -- while we love the 17Z we would have gone with the 19H just to have the extra load capacity.

Most toll roads charge more for each axle. It is also easier to maneuver a single axle trailer when backing up.
