Thinking about a 19h or 23b hybrid

My dad had a 19H until mom passed away, and he could not camp anymore. I liked it so well, I picked myself one up last spring. With two kids and two adults, its great. I don't like extra moving parts, so I stayed away from the ones with the slide out. If you like the feel and sounds of sleeping in a pop up, but don't want the work, I can't recommend these campers enough. They are durable if you keep up on checking for any possible leaks, and that can happen in any model, and you need to really watch the canvas when you shut it up to leave. If not folded in right, it can tear the canvas, or deform the seal. It's not any extra work, just pay attention when you close it.

The shower is small like others have said, but I never use it, I just take a can of disinfectant, and flip flops and use the shower house. The only big thing I can complain about is the power awning, I hate it, I wish the dealer would have had manual awnings on them when I bought.

My BIL had a 2006 23B and the published exterior length was 23'-11".., so I question the 20'-11" length as well.

Yeah I thought that spec may be off, the 19H is showing 20'8", I`m sure the 23B is more then 3 inches longer!

Rest assured that it's a typo. Last year my son and I went to a CG 5 days before the rest of the family came up and we simply turtled until they arrived then flopped the bunks out. The HTT is a very versatile unit especially if you need the "being outdoors" feel of a pop-up. The slide out in the 23B is only about 16" but it makes such a dramatic difference in the roominess factor. I can't imagine sleeping without being able to unzip the canvas and look up at the stars or watch lightning as the warm summer breeze blows through. Is it spring yet??

we have a 19H and really like it... me, wife, and 5yr old... we use it for fishing trips with a few guys as well, but i would say 'sleeps 8-9' is kinda funny. 3 of my fishing buddies and this would be crowded.

i've made a few upgrades, and have a few more planned, but it's a great little camper, and your truck should tow it just fine. i don't care for the claustrophobic feel of some of the travel trailers, so the perfect replacement for our old jayco popup was a hybrid.

i liked the 23B and 23J for the extra storage, though... that big closet/cabinet would sure be nice. though now, seeing how fast and far i have to tow, those are getting into diesel land to me.

there is 'hidden' storage in a 19H if you know how to find it!

on the 19H,

pros:

easy tow
large beds
easy setup (though it takes about the same time as our old pop up)
high ceiling
perfect for two adults and one or two kids.
durable, simple, no slideouts. great windows, door is excellent, aluminum frame, etc. etc.
door in back corner... can't put my finger on this one, but like the door in that location!


cons:
storage. like i said, there is more to be had, but not much room for anything but food.
sometimes hard for two adults to navigate around in (one easy fix is a 'shorty' or 'surfboard' table)
cramped shower
low drains
could use more counter space.... but i also have a plan for that.

i was torn between the 23b, 23j and the 19h as well, and glad i went with the 19, even with the added room of the 23s... it's just the right size for us, and we don't mind tossing bags into the spare bunk, or leaving them in the truck. sometimes, we don't even lower the back bunk, as the young one sleeps on the sofa or dinette bed... and i'm not RV shower friendly anyway at 6'4 and 240lbs.

I have a 19H and love it. 2 on each bed, 2 on the dining room table folded down and 2 on the couch folded down is 8. Technically the larger bed is capable of holding 3 people (a small child or a third adult if that's what you're in to).

Although I love our 19H if I had a bigger vehicle I would move away from a hybrid to a full trailer and set up time would be cut in half.

Does the length include the tongue of the TT? My X19H is 17 feet and some change, but when you include the tongue, yeah, it's 19 feet. I just assumed that when they say 19 feet, that means the living space is 19 feet, but if don't watch my P's and Q's, I may end up sleeping on the tongue anyway. Happy Camping.

You have aroused my curiosity.....where is this hidden storage you speak of? Is it under the rear dinette bench seat, just under where the thermostat mounts to the wall?

Yes, if you are referring to Jayco's published "exterior length". The exterior length is from rear bumper to the front coupler (tongue). Some manufactures may also include a "campsite length" with POP's/HTT's ends opened, and in most cases would be longer than the published exterior length.

We love our X23B. We moved up from a 8 ft basic pop up with no options. There is just 2 of us and a yorkipoo. We bought ours used. its a 2010 and was barely used. We have had no issues at all. We have run out of fresh water on a weeks vacation but that was no big deal just take the 5-gallon water jug and refill. As far as the grey and black tanks if we are camping for a week we are just careful. I only do the dishes once a day and sometimes I can get away with every 2 days.
As mentioned on a reply we often leave the bed ends up depending on the weather. We were camping the Canadian Thanksgiving and that weekend was cold so we only put down the back bunk, and when camping for a week, If the forcast calls for rain the last day we put the ends up the day before so we are not packing it away wet. Hubby likes his tV loud and you can hear it outside thru the bed ends so that could be a problem with some parks if you are watching tv late into the night. Which ever one you chose you will love your new jayfeather hybrid!

Doug-- There isn't a " lift kit" for the torsion axels ( there is a factory option when ordering new), it has to be done by a welding shop. You might want to print the pics of what other owners have done and bring to the welder with you. The only other option is using the smallest " blue buddy" that might fit under the drains. Larry

I'll look into that next year.
I did purchase a small 15 gal Blue Buddy that I thought may help in a pinch.
Hopefully I'll be able to get it lifted next year.

I am assuming this can't be a totally non-functioning system at a dump station or campsite? I assume you may have to lift the hose up and help the system empty?
We will not be putting any solids into the black tank, so I am hoping it will be managable.
Obviously, I am still concerned about hitting a steep drive into a gas station or something and damaging the system.
That's why I will pursue a more permanent fix when I get the time and money.

i'm probably going to try to figure a way to lift mine a bit as well.. i also plan to go with 14" aluminum wheels on mine as soon as the almost new tires wear out on these 13s... i'm going to run a test with some old 14s first to make sure they work ok...

They fit fine. I have 14" wheels and AT tires on mine.

If you are referring to the the Jayco TorFlex torsion axle, Dexter does offer a lift kit:

I wondered the same thing too.

So I sent Jayco an e-mail about this and their response was the 20'-11" is the "box" length.

That makes sense, but then the 19H has a listing of 20' 8". One would think the box length would be considerably smaller on that model. I know with the Jayflight line, the dimensions given in the specs are from ball coupler to bumper, not the box length. I still think the 20' 11" is a typo.

Guess what guys, mystery solved. I just rechecked the spec page for the 23B and it appears to be correct now! 24'5"! So either our forum discussion or glsimms email got it fixed!
