Cool Tow Vehicle milage with the X17A

Greetings All!

We just bought a 2013 X17A last month and took it out to Minnesota last weekend. We pull it with a Dodge Dakota Quad cab 4.7 V-8. Our average gas milage was 10 mpg and the truck ran stellar rpms ran about 2,000 on flat and 3400 on inclines. What do you tow with and from the other forums I've read this is not out of line for GPM. I'm wondering if anyone pulls with a Ford F-150 quad cab V-8 and what your milage is? Normally gas milage on the Dodge is 18-21 with no tow.. Just curious I do like that Ford Quad....

Thanks

I pulled a 34 footer Forest River trailer with a 2012 F150 with the 5.0 V8 and got about 10mpg average. The rig pulled great up hills and on flats. Now I am pulling a 39 foot Jayco trailer with the 2013 F250 diesel and I get a bit better at about 12mpg towing. The F250 gets about 18mpg without towing, the F150 is about 20mpg without the tow weight. That's a 10mpg reduction on the F150 and 6mpg reduction on the F250 but to be fair the F250 is pulling 3,000lbs more weight.

At 4400# pulling our X23B the 03 Expedition 5.4 was getting 9.x mpg. One trip I actually got 10.0 but I think the wind was at my back and it was downhill both ways. My new F 350 6.7 diesel just turned in 13.5 on a 2500 mi round trip to NM which I think is great. A biggie is, "what speed are you pulling?". The expe was pretty content to galoomp along at 65 and while the pickup would like to go 70-75 I've convinced myself that a tad under 65 is just fine.

We average 10-13mpg depending upon winds. Generally drive at 65mph.
TT weights about 3200 lbs when towing.

Just bought a 2013 Touareg TDI and I have the EXP21M @ 4800 lbs.+ and from Bellingham to Astoria my average is 23 mpg. In Bellingham ( small hills) I get 30. I'm sooo happy with this car and wish I bought it sooner. My next stop will be Beverly Beach for another week. Stop after that will be Winchester Bay.

We get 10-11 towing our 23B. We have an 05 ram 1500 quad cab with the 4.7 V8.
We used to get 17 towing our popup. Love the hybrid but miss the gas mileage

I thought it would be awesome for my wife until we looked at the price! I don't think the mileage is worth the towing experience from a short wheelbase unibody given the entry costs is as high an HD truck.

I paid $43,500 for the Sport with Nav. And the ride is great, turns on a dime. I have a GMC truck but it drives, sits and turns like a truck. I almost don't know my EXP21M is behind me. I can do HWY 101 & 1 on the northern And central California coast and do the GrapeVine north of LA with the AC on with no problem. YOU need to just drive one and really see for yourself what a fine SUV this really is, it's a real sleeper. I'm the LAST person who thought I would own one but one day of putting it thru the test I bought it. I have an Audi A6 Avant also and I like the Touareg ride better, you just need to drive one.

LOL...I love my Duramax because drives, sits, turns and sounds like a truck. I hate both my company car (Ford Escape EcoBoost) and wife's Infinity because they are not anything like my truck.

Why do you need something that sounds like a Duramax truck, just asking. I think most of us like quiet and smooth that's why we love the outdoors and want to be as close to it as we can.

Another thing to remember is that when you arrive, your TV turns into just a vehicle. I used a Chevy 3500 HD crew cab extended bed pickup with the 6.x diesel and duramax tranny for a trip to California this summer. It towed the X20E like a dream and had tons of storage, but driving around, parking, etc. was HORRIBLE!

We've been throwing around trading the FJ for a Tundra with a bed cover but hate to give up the off-road ability. It would be a much better TV though.

I guess that is why the phrase "different strokes for different folks" exists. Our trips to outdoors aren't exclusively to find scerene environments. We also like riding horses, dirt bikes, boating, shooting and generally just being able to things we don't do on our land at home. If I really just need piece and quiet, that exists on my back porch. That said we are very courteous campers and are very aware of our activities in and around the campground.

The idea of going out into the woods to meditate and commune with nature isn't what we all about.

We managed about 8 to 10 mpg pulling our 17c with our 99 Isuzu Trooper with 225k miles on it. It was burning oil like crazy (1 1/2 quarts in about 125 miles pulling the camper). Realized that the trooper also had a serious compression issue in cylinder 4. We decided to tear down the motor once we had the camper back home from our clubs gold claim. Motor is rebuilt now (that was a fun first time experience!) and it's not burning any oil (1000 miles on it since we finished the rebuild the week after Thanksgiving. I figure that the mileage will be about the same though. I am hoping it pulls better up the hills with all 6 cylinders actually working. LOL. It never had trouble on most terrain and flat highway and towed like a dream otherwise - no sway issues, breaking was great etc.

Forgot to mention we also hauled LOTS of stuff in/on the trooper including a gold dredge on the roof rack, 2400hcsi generator in the back, misc gold recovery equipment etc.

Here is a shot from our maiden voyage to a mountain state camp ground in April of last year.
