We towed a 2,200# TT with a 1/4 ton truck for 6 years with zero difficulties using just a 6" drop hitch.
After I replaced the trailer's axle, I found the brakes hadn't been working properly since the trailer was new in 1983.
Having properly operating brakes on that rig was a noticeable, though minor improvement.
The new trailer (19RD) is just past 1/2 way into our truck's capability. Our first trip was with a 4" rise hitch. YUCK!!! I got a WDH before our second trip. What an improvement!
So, if your 1/2 ton truck is pulling your trailer nicely. And you don't feel like the handling has been compromised by the tongue weight, don't waste money on a WDH.
However, if the front tires of your tow have been unloaded so much that the truck is less than pleasant to drive when hitched up, go now and get a WDH! The difference is tremendous when needed. But if you don't need it, you're wasting money.
