Welding 2" receiver to frame

Wondering if anyone knows what would be a good price for them to weld a 2" receiver on our frame, this to be done by a rv dealer. Taking it in on tues next week, will get an estimate then, using it for a Allen sport bike rack, 2-3 bikes on it. Any suggestions on brand, I like the draw tite one they just put on our car, and rack fits it with bolt tight.

Personally I would not do this on the Jayfeather series trailers. I don't believe that the frame can take the beating over a period of time. Any reason you don't carry the bikes in the truck bed?

That said its hard to say what a good price is. Depends on what local rates are. I'd maybe check a local welding shop just for comparison. I suspect the RV dealer is going to charge their normal hourly rate with a minimum of 1 hour.

We don't have a truck bed that's open, have a cap, and have searched a lot of hybrids are doing this and it's been fine as long as you weld it to the frame and don't put more than 2 bikes on. But I see your point, we have debated about it for the same reason you state, but even the jayco dealer had the name of a person who could weld it on for us. Someone on here said he had spent $300, we camp no more than 2 hours or so away from home and go 3 times a year. We also need all the room in the back of truck for other stuff. This dealer that we would have put it on says they do it all the time and no one has ever told them of problems, they said they see a lot of people who don't weld it to the frame and bikes come off or bumper is off down the road. I don't know, like to hear a lot of other opinions on here too.

Do you think the tongue on these campers could handle a tongue mounted rack?

This is what we plan to install on our 19H as soon as the banker (DW) says I have the money to do it.

Look into a welded receiver but decided to just put the bikes in the camper a lot cheaper. Just cover them with some old blankets and lean them against the couch

I understand completely. Our truck had a cap on it when I bought it. And in part for the same reasons, we sold the cap. I bought an Extang Solid Fold tonneau cover which is supposed to be delivered today. That way I have something lockable when not hauling bikes and other things. I could have gone either way on this because there is other stuff we'd like to carry in the bed while traveling.

Another thing to consider is to bolt fork mounts onto a 2x4 and still haul the bikes in the bed. It'll work, I wanted to make sure in case we couldn't sell the cap. I pulled the front wheel off of one of ours to see and it slid right under the cap. Of course if you don't have quick release front wheels its just a little more painful, but not bad. And you'll have to organize the back of your truck to make it work out.

Fork Mounts

Yes. Its not that much extra weight and your truck should have something like a 1300# tongue limit, which should be plenty.

Our dealer quoted us about $250 for parts, and another $250 to install it. I passed with intentions to have a hitch welded on by a welding shop for a lot less. In my case the dealer installed one on our unit by accident when they were doing the PDI. I was told they were doing two PDI's on the same model trailer at the same time and the welder accidently got the trailers mixed up. Their loss was my gain. The dealer welded reinforcement plates to the frame then the hitch to the plates.
