What about hybrids????

Hey Gang,

While I read this forum most of the time, another RV site I sometimes go to is RV.net. I was reading from a poster there who was unhappy with his Rockwood Roo. It has 3 drop down beds and all 3 have water damage. Other folks chimed in and the consensus was that for the most part, hybrid TT's have water problems.

I have had my X23B for a couple of years now and I have not experienced any water issues yet. Is there some type of maintenenace to do on the bunk end seals? What do you do to yours?

A buddy at work says he has some type of spray foam sealant protector he uses. I was wondering about this myself.

We bought our second HTT last year. Our old one was an '03 purchased new. We had it for 10 years, no leaks.

Check those negative posts. Almost everyone of them will be an opinion from a non-hybrid owner. For the most part, hybrids do not have water problems.

If anything too often people don't season their tenting when new. If you do have tent leaks then you can use seam sealer. Otherwise there is nothing to do, the bunk ends are vinyl. Also many people confuse condensation with leaks.

Doc I don't think it was a condensation issue. As I read it, the owner had replaced the complete bunk end due to water damage.

Here is the link to the thread I saw:

Had a 2008 19H for 5.5 seasons. No water leak issues at all. And I didn't even do anything to help prevent it. Jayco tends to have higher end canvas.

Not sure about Roo but anytime I've seen one in a campground, I kinda went "meh". But I could be Jayco-biased. ;-)

Last year, we cross-shopped Jayfeather and Roo before purchasing ours. We saw that the fit and finish looked better on the Jayfeather inside and out. Ironically, we first became interested in hybrids after seeing some Shamrocks and Roos and really liked the concept and the back-saving set-up versus a popup.

There has been a lot of discussion on the Forest River Owners Forum on hybrids with leaking bunkends. There were some design changes that were prone to leaking and quite a few were replaced by the factory..I have not heard of any other manufacturer having the same level of problems. We had several inches of ice twice this last winter. No leaks whatsoever on our 23B.

We had a 2010 Forest River Shamrock 21SS and within one year the front bunk door was delaminating even though never seen a water leak. Traded it in for our current camper and going on our second season and still love it..

I struggle to understand why anyone would buy a Forest River product and put money in the pocket of Warren Buffet. I think a lot of people would feel the same way if they new how what political causes "good old" Warren was donating to with the cash he receives from purchases of his companies products.

1) Buffet has money invested in to so many things there is no possible way that you can avoid putting money in his pocket, or your own 401K

2) Please, this is not the place to discuss politics. Can we stick to Jaycos and camping?

Yes, another rant thread. Tales of leaking hybrids came from the days when it was a new concept. I forget the company that came up with the idea but the first few years weren't too good. So now when one of these negative posts pops up everyone jumps all over it with "see I told you so!". The campgrounds are full of hybrids.

This is like anything else, cars, TVs, appliances, whatever, there's always some that are just a problem. Few people post threads about how thrilled they are with something they bought.

Anyway, most owners are pretty happy with them. Like I said we are on our second one and never had bunk leaks with the first one. If they were bad, then the forums would be saturated with rants. And no one would be buying hybrids either.

Didn't know who Warren Buffet is when we bought our Forest River and still don't know, or care, today. Life to short to worry about what thief is in what office and where they get donations from. So don't struggle on account of me..

Even though our leaked (front door delaminating) It was not what we hated about it. It was the noise of fellow campers so much that we couldn't sleep. Even though we tent camped for years it seems being higher up, you heard more than on the ground. At lesst that was our experience. Plus we are getting to old to be climbing over each other getting in and out of bed. Lol...

We have had two leaks in our rear bunk. Both times it has been an operator issue! I closed the rear bunk the first year we had it with part of the skirt between the two seals along the top edge were it is out of site from the ground. I noticed it while looking out a second floor window at our old house. The other time the dealer did the same thing. That time I had about a ¼ gallon of water trapped in the fabric which created a small bucket to hold most of it. We are extremely careful to ensure that does not happen anymore.

As for sealants, I just wipe the seals down a couple times a year, along with the slide out seal, using a product I think is call Protectall, which I got at the dealer. I am not sure it does any good, but I do it.

The other day I checked out a Rockwood Roo 233S at the local camping world. It is the Forest River equilivant of the X23F. The trailer was nice but I liked the Jayco better. The two things I liked better about the 233S was the dinette slideout floor was on the same level as the main floor. There was not step up like in the X23F. I can live with this. The other thing was the latching system for the beds seems much better. You can do the whole thing from down low and the salesman said you don't need a ladder. However what Jagiven just stated about checking to see that there is not fabric in the seals eleminates this arguement. I still like a Jayco over others.

I think the new Forest rivers also have the latches low now for you short folk. I am 6 foot and still needed a ladder if the back of the site dipped down. Another thing I didn't like about our hybrid..Plus the solar covers..auuggg

That is one thing that we are looking forward to our new White Hawk - a lot less work to get setup and tear down than we had with our hybrid.

It will be nice to be able to keep the beds made!

Well, coming from a popup it seems a hybrid would be a lot less setup. I guess it is all a matter of your perspective. Oh, and I'm only 5-8 so a lower handle is a definate advantage.

Scott, I'm 5' 10" and I find I have to stand on something to lock/unlock the front bed. I can reach it but its a strain. But yes, a hybrid is way easier and faster to setup than a PUP. Our old '03 Kiwi had the poles to hold up the beds. The new HTTs have cables so it saves even more time.
