Where to mount a Jerry Can...

So i am going to be hauling the trailer some long distances over then next month or so, and i want to keep a Jerry can for possible issues (Jeep only has a 20 gallon tank sadly). Anyone else throw a can on their trailer? I don't want it in the jeep for obvious reasons, and i don't want it in the trailer either for the same reason. I have a couple places that i could throw a mount of some sort.







I could shift the battery over a bit on the tongue, but i am not sure its the best place. On the rear bumper may be a good place, but i have yet to find a decent mount and i am not so sure using straps would give me the confidence not to want to check it repeatedly.

DW and I were JUST talking about this this morning!

I would avoid the rear bumper unless you can use something mounted directly to the frame. Like those bolt-on receiver tubes? No way. I would constantly be afraid of gas cans falling off and becoming little road bombs!

Lots of people have bolted or welded receivers to their frame though, and that I would trust. You could also fabricate a rack on the tongue to go up over the battery and propane. I've seen that done before.

I wonder if you could fit a special rack there on your tongue? Something like this:

I have the benefit of having a pickup, so I could store mine in the bed in a purpose-built rack. That's my current plan if/when I decide to carry extra fuel.

I like the look of that one camper_Bob, may be what I end up doing. tommorow we are going to a park that is almost exactly the distance I figure a full tank will take us before I get very nervous, thankfully there is gas stops on the way if my nerves are shot, but it will be a good test.

See if you can fit a can between the spare tire and the body then hold it in place with a bicycle cable lock.. (around the can and the post the spare is on) It wont prevent theft but will secure the can to the RV

I'd be looking at the many options for mounting the can on the exterior of your Jeep. This is almost standard equipment for the Jeep offroaders. Sure it's good to have the fuel available on the TT while getting to the CG, but what happens if you run out while doing a bit of offroading while there? Are you going to walk back to the CG to get the Jerry can off the TT?

Whenever I take my generator on a trip, I carry my fuel in the basement of the fifth wheel, usually 25 gallons.

I like that jerry can holder Bob linked to. I would see if it could be mounted on the side of the tongue’s A-frame assembly, as far back as possible. If you’re not hauling fuel, you could get a jerry can for water, or make a steel sleeve, and place your wood blocking in it.

I have a 22 gallon fuel tank in my Dakota (way to small), I typically go 150 miles (1/4 tank left) before starting to seriously look for fuel.

Yes there are a lot of options for Jeeps, but not so much my jeep (WJ).

That's true, and even the options for the Grand Cherokee depend on an aftermarket bumper or some other add-on. Sure, if you want to get OR bumpers front and rear, and give it a little lift, there are plenty of options, but for a factory Grand Cherokee, I see them being somewhat limited.

That being said, there is a really good point on here about keeping the fuel with the vehicle that uses it at all times, and that's definitely something to consider IMO.

Absolutely, i have seen a couple protected roof rack setups on WJ's. the idea of a gas tank of the roof is very odd to me. I will keep scouring the internet for ideas, thanks for all the help!

I installed this a-frame carrier on my 184BH and it can easily carry fuel cans etc. Could probably hang a jerry can on each side and then a generator or cargo box on top. Very sturdy- love it.

Looks to be a tough rack BUT 2 gas cans @about 40lbs each and a small genny and you will be adding 120 lbs directly to the tongue weight of your tow. Don't think you will want to put that much weight up front.

On my particular application there's very little tongue weight to begin with. Your mileage may vary. Maybe run with the cans in place and generator in the back of the trailer to balance- then move generator to the shelf when parked. Lots of options.
