Samsung microwave recall hits 150 RV manufacturers

Samsung microwave recall hits 150 RV manufacturers

April 24, 2014 by Russ De Maris | Filed under Misc.. More than 150 different RV manufacturers, and by extension the owners of their rigs, have a cause for concern in the kitchen. Samsung Electronics announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that many microwave ovens it produced may create a safety hazard. Here’s the problem:
During a three-years period some of the Samsung-made microwave ovens for the RV industry have turned out to have a defective part that can cause them to turn on by themselves. The result of this unexpected start-up can in some cases lead to smoke, even fire. The result of all of this is a recall.
Since not all RV manufacturers have “reported in,” we’re providing a list of those ovens currently under recall. They are: MR1031WB, MR1032BB, MR1033SB, MR1351WB, MR1352BB. These microwaves were built by Samsung between May 2002 and July 2003 and installed in RVs sold during that time frame. Models of microwave oven affected by the earlier recall notice include: MR5491G, MR5491G01, MR5492W, MR5494W01, MR5493G, MR5493G01, MR5494W, MR7491G, MR7491G01, MR7492W, MR7492W01, MR7493G, MR7493G01, MR6698WB, MR6699GB, and MR6699SB.
How can you determine if your oven is included in the recall? You can find the model number and manufacture date of your oven on the inside of the microwave oven door. Microwave oven models MR1031UWC, MR1031CWC, MR1032UBC, MR1032CBC as well as MR1351WB manufactured after May 2003 and MR1352WB manufactured after August 2003 are not included in this recall. No other Samsung microwave ovens are involved in this recall.
If you do find out that your microwave oven is part of this recall, here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe from danger. If possible, simply unplug the oven and don’t use it. If you cannot access the power cord, then open the door and leave it open – it cannot start with the oven door open.
If yours is part of the recall list, contact Samsung at 800-932-3837 between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM (Eastern Time) or email mworecall@sea.samsung.com. Include your name, address, and model number in the body of all e-mails. Samsung will direct you to take your microwave oven (or if you can’t remove it from the rig, to take the entire rig) to an authorized service center for free repair.

We just purchased a 2002 Jayco Eagle in October so have not been out in it yet. Installed a new battery today and plugged her into 120v. When we were in the camper figuring out how to lite the stove and to see if the fridge cooled the microwave turned on by itself. Now I read this. We went out right away to unplug it. Checked the model number and yes ours is listed but it says ours was manufactured in Apr of 2002 don't know if that leaves us out since the date doesn't match.

I sent an e-mail first because I wanted to get something on paper that I could print out. So far nothing. Will wait a few days and if I don't receive a reply I will try calling next.

Darla

Darla-
How did that microwave ordeal ever turn out? I bought a Jayco Kiwi last year and the microwave doesn't work, I'm wondering if its just unplugged because it is one of the recalls.

I have just bought an 04 wilderness and had one of these microwaves in it that seemed to do stuff on its own.... found this thread and called Samsung. first in Canada and then transferred to the USA. They have told me that they will compensate me $200 for the microwave. That I should receive a cheque in 7 to 10 business days.

see if it comes.....

Microwave with a mind of it’s own.

Just brought home our new Jayco Eagle HT and the microwave was running when I went to put something in the RV in the morning. 2nd time it turned itself on. Wondering if there will be a recall on this model also. For now it is unplugged. Warranty issues hopefully taken care of before the season starts! We bought a Jayco because our last one was a Forest River and it spent the first summer getting warranty work done. Wish they had some pride in their work before they sent them out.
