More than 150 different RV manufacturers, and by extension the owners of their rigs, have a cause for concern in the kitchen. Samsung Electronics announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that many microwave ovens it produced may create a safety hazard. Here’s the problem:
During a three-years period some of the Samsung-made microwave ovens for the RV industry have turned out to have a defective part that can cause them to turn on by themselves. The result of this unexpected start-up can in some cases lead to smoke, even fire. The result of all of this is a recall.
Since not all RV manufacturers have “reported in,” we’re providing a list of those ovens currently under recall. They are: MR1031WB, MR1032BB, MR1033SB, MR1351WB, MR1352BB. These microwaves were built by Samsung between May 2002 and July 2003 and installed in RVs sold during that time frame. Models of microwave oven affected by the earlier recall notice include: MR5491G, MR5491G01, MR5492W, MR5494W01, MR5493G, MR5493G01, MR5494W, MR7491G, MR7491G01, MR7492W, MR7492W01, MR7493G, MR7493G01, MR6698WB, MR6699GB, and MR6699SB.
How can you determine if your oven is included in the recall? You can find the model number and manufacture date of your oven on the inside of the microwave oven door. Microwave oven models MR1031UWC, MR1031CWC, MR1032UBC, MR1032CBC as well as MR1351WB manufactured after May 2003 and MR1352WB manufactured after August 2003 are not included in this recall. No other Samsung microwave ovens are involved in this recall.
If you do find out that your microwave oven is part of this recall, here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe from danger. If possible, simply unplug the oven and don’t use it. If you cannot access the power cord, then open the door and leave it open – it cannot start with the oven door open.
If yours is part of the recall list, contact Samsung at 800-932-3837 between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM (Eastern Time) or email
mworecall@sea.samsung.com. Include your name, address, and model number in the body of all e-mails. Samsung will direct you to take your microwave oven (or if you can’t remove it from the rig, to take the entire rig) to an authorized service center for free repair.
