Black water 'washer' leak

We have a 2014 Jayflight 22FB. Yesterday we de-winterized, sanitized, cleaned, lubed, washed, waxed, and made sure everything is still in good working order.

Everything is! Except...the external washer for the black water tank. We hooked the hose up to the external port and turned the water on. We didn't hear the usual whirring sound of the sprinkler and then we saw water running out of the bottom right hand corner below a small storage compartment. So, we turned off the water and cleaned up the mess and took a look. (yes, the dump valve was open)

Inside there is a white hose that runs from the external port to a black plastic valve-looking piece; another white hose runs from the black piece down to the black tank. The best we can find is that this black piece is some type of valve; maybe an atmospheric valve? The water is coming out of the top of it when it is hooked up.

We used it last fall on our last outing with no problem, so I'm pretty sure it's not installed backwards (which I've read has been done) so it's either faulty or maybe stopped up? We have never filled the black tank to capacity.

Can anyone shed some light on what exactly this piece is called and if you have had / heard of issues with it?

Had the same problem and it was the check valve. Common problem, sorry to say.

One of the first things we delete on all our RV's. They have caused too many floods for me to have one. Almost every one we've had has leaked. Just not worth the risk. I know what they're for, but.....


If you buy an aftermarket system such as the Tornado or one of the others, no anti-siphon valve, yet when building an RV, code says you have to have one, mounted above the toilet level. Go figure.

I had that same problem, but figured it was because I used it to flush my black tank and then didn't get all the water out of it when winterizing as it leaked for the first time after winter. So, went to a dealer and got it fixed, checked it out and it didn't leak. Still doesn't do a great job of flushing the black tank, but, oh well, life's not perfect.

Check that...I think the Tornado does come with a check valve. However, it won't be above the toilet.

Maybe so. Either way. An anti siphon valve mounted in a cabinet or wall inside the RV that is famous for leaking, is just a bad idea.
